Forest Fire Has Residents On Evacuation Alert

July 25, 2003 - An out-of-control forest fire near Blairmore is moving closer to homes, where residents have been put on evacuation alert.
Firefighters continue to battle the blaze, which has doubled in size in just the past day.
Waterbombing helicopters are dumping water from above, while firefighters on the ground do what they can to contain the fire, which has been burning since Wednesday.
At last count, it had destroyed 2,800 hectares of forest. Officials don't know how it started, only that it spread very quickly.
The situation is so bad, more crews are being called out, even some from Northern Alberta. More than 125 firefighters in all, are fighting the blaze.
Meanwhile, about 20 campers have already been told to leave, along with crews at a nearby oil rig. Roads in the immediate area have also been closed, and a fire ban is in place.
Crews have enough to worry about with the forest, but they're also trying to protect the local wildlife and livestock.
Officials say today's cooler weather helped their efforts, and they're hopeful Mother Nature will continue to co-operate over the next few days.
