That is good, being adaptable and willing to relocate is very important in the world of wildland firefighting. One thing that is going to work against you is that it is so close to fire season, and most companies have already done all of their hiring and pre-season training. With that being said, it might be better for you to wait until next season. Most government agencies start looking at their applications as early as January, so apply for as many entry level wildland jobs as early as possible. I know you said you have your first aid, but if you were interested in obtaining your EMT-B certificate would make you stand out from the other applicants. If you have your heart set on working THIS season, start checking the craigslist jobs section for every major city and type in "firefighter" in the job search. There are still some private wildland firefighting companies trying to staff some of their type 2 hand crews at the last minute. If you don't get picked up this season, and are still interested next season, send me an email at [email protected] I am an engine boss for a private wildland strike team (3 engines and 1 water tender), and we select a few new hires each season who are motivated and stand out as hard workers. Good luck!
