This idea has been in my head for a while now and have ran several searches and can't find anyone who has done it yet. I want to spec a bobcat toolcat 5600 as a wildland utv. The machine it self is very rugged and better built than most utvs on the market. It has a sharper turn radius and higher payload than any utv out there. In fact it is firtualy a small brushtruck. Most of my area is relatively flat with a few rolling hills. No real mountains to worry about. 70% brush country and the rest open coastal fields. I think with a 100gal skid untitled and 5gal foam in the back it would be unstoppable. A monitor could be added up front for one man opporation. I would obviously want to keep the front arm boom with a blade or bucket for cutting fire line.
Now for a few specs for ya.
56hp turbo diesel cab heat and ac. Two speed hydrostatic transmission. The bed is rated to haul and dump 2000lbs!!! Don't really need the dump but there is no option to leave it off. The rated lift for the boom arm is 1500 but I have tested it an it will lift more than that to a height of 7'.
So my questions are these... Top travel speed is 18 mph. Do the departments that have the fire rescue utv's ever really run them that fast? Is speed a need for wildland FF? Also it weighs the same as a bobcat s150 which is about 5200lbs. It has the same tires as a skid steer and very rugged.
So what do you guys think?
