help needed (computer related)

Hey everyone i'm in need of some help if anyone is computer savy on here.
I had a laptop go down and took the hard drive out of it and put it into a case to pretty much make it an external hard drive for my new laptop. However I can't open anything off of my old laptop.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can access the stuff???
