  • What A Schpuzzall

Just got back from my regular noon hour walk, and as I was awaiting the light to change at C and 6th Steets, I saw a big line of cars stopped on C Street because the construction site was blocking traffic so that one of the big dumpster bins could be loaded up. There were two cop cars in that line, waiting patiently like everyone else.

However coming down 6th, towards Pennsylvania was a SUV followed by another cop. Both turned into C Street... or well should say tried. The SUV stopped on the crosswalk, and the cop was in the middle of the intersection.

Anyhow, buddy cop decides this is no good, so he backs up and turns around - I figured he just circle the block. Umm. Nope. He BACKs up into C Street, and parks. Right in front of a fire hydrant. So I'm think'n here. I could open my wallet, flash my County FD ID, and tell him he is in violation. Or do like I did and decide that "parking for cops while doing Admin runs to the District Court House have special privilages". Too bad there wasn't another gas leak from the construction site again. Would have loved to see a 4 inch line punched through his windows, A la BMW.

Can't the FD move the vehicle?I was told back in 92 that they could around here.It might have gotten stopped by complainants who had more "important" things to do than find a better spot to park.

Several years ago,I was assigned by my rentacop company to keep people out of a private lot during the Danny Thomas Golf Classic.Nearby the drive way of my post was a fireplug that had two vehicles parked on either side of it at the legal distance.
People would drive up,see the open spot, park there and as soon as they left, two Sheriff's Deputies who coincidentally parked their POVs there, came out of hiding to bag another ticket.
After a while of watching,I walked over and asked if I could make a citizen's arrest on them. When warily asked why,I said,"Well it looks to me like you boys're hunting over a baited field."
Actually,I didn't give a rip about the tickets. We had a pretty good joke about it and I left.Anyone who sees an empty parking space surrounded by other cars and picks it without checking first should remember the trusim from grade school class trips and why there was always an empty seat by this one kid that always got car sick.

Sadly no fire alarms were pulled, and no one from the Dept was required to respond to the 500 block of Pennsylvania Ave NW. Which means the cop is probably in the Court House doing his thing, and will likely depart the area, without incident. As for can or does the FD move/authorize a tow, I have no idea. In the spirit of "Professional Courtesy" I would expect they would be kind about how much glass they break LOL if the situation arose, but I suspect they would either just work around the car or request the cop be found or move it themselves.

I was talking about some schmuck parking his vehicle in front of the hydrant. When I was told about that,it was in the vein of the driver pulling up behind and putting the transmission into granny low and goosing the motor.
I suppose a more lawsuit neutral solution could be had if a forklift was handy. D
