At least in my eyes anyway. This is a story about a father with a disabled son. In 1977 Rick Hoyt told his father (Richard) that he wanted them to run a 5k marathon to raise money for a local lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Richard ran and finished that marathon while pushing Rick's wheelchair. After the race Rick told his dad that while they were running the race, he did not feel disabled. Over the last 29 years Team Hoyt have competed in 206 Triathlons (6 of them were Ironman distances), 20 Duathlons, 64 Marathons (including 24 straight Boston Marathons), 7 18.6 milers, 78 Half Marathons, 1 20K, 34 10 Milers, 27 Falmouth 7.1 milers, 8 15K, 204 10K, 143 5 Milers, 4 8K, 15 4 Milers, 92 5K, 6 20 Milers, and 2 11K for a total of 911 events. Rick has been at his Father's side every step of every marathon, and in the swim events Richard would pull Rick behind him in an inflatable boat. In 1992 they biked and ran across the USA, 3,735 miles in 45 consecutive days. When Rick was born in 1962 the doctors told Richard that he should "put Rick away" and that "he’d be a vegetable all his life". Richard would not take that for an answer and in 1993 Rick graduated from Boston University with a degree in special education.
To me the really awesome part is the fact that this all started because one disabled person wanted to help another.
Here is their website
Another cool link about the two
