That was an excellent find... thank you!"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

Wiki has a great article on the F14: Wiki
Without the ability to re-manufacture or replace the F-14 fleet, the tired and high-maintenance airframes and engines fitted mostly with technology from the 1970s are reaching the limit of their useful lives, though by many standards the F-14 is still competitive or superior to most other operational fighters, including the Super Hornet. A major factor to incorporate the F/A-18E/F and decommission the F-14 is mainly due to the high amount of maintenance required to keep the Tomcats operational.[verification needed] On average, an F-14 requires nearly fifty maintenance hours for every flight hour, five to ten times that required by the F/A-18E/F.So you call this your free country
Tell me why it costs so much to live

Almost as sad as watching the History Channel last week showing footage of another venerable airframe sitting in the Mojave Desert.......
The F-4 Phantom II.
I love the Hornet, but it just doesn't have the draw of the Tomcat."Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like." Will Rogers

It was still sad to see a hundred or so Phantoms dying in the desert.
All the great warbirds are dying off. Except the venerable Huey and Huey Cobra, which the Marine Corps is still flying. If "slightly" updated models anyway."Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like." Will Rogers

I served in a DDG so I can't get too worked up about the Navy changing horses as it were to the F/A 18.My ship's website www.ussmahan.org has pictures of them cutting her up.I got to the point where the superstructure was gone and I could see where my old rack in 1st Division was and I couldn't go any farther.
It is sad that the ships and planes we grew up with are gone or going away but times change and the equipment should too,as long as it's for the better and not because some bureaucrap got the idea his area should make the next big thing for the military.Comment

Wow...I had a friend who crewed a TomCat on the USS Independance CV-62. He said they were horrendous to work on and needed tons of working on to keep 'em up...But, man was they suuuuuuu-weet!
Flying a TomCat was by far my first career choice when I graduated from high school...This piece almost mnakes me wanna cry.
But...a "disagreement" with the recruiter left me to search out my second career choice--which also flopped...along with #3...
And here I am in #4, thanking God everyday for it!Comment

There is many an AF aircraft that is probably not too many years behind the Tomcat. The 15's and A-10's are getting up there in age. Then again you look at the BUFF (B-52 for those not in the know) and it will be flying for at least another decade if not longer and its been around since the 50's.Tom Warshaw

Good point and the frame for that and the other variants are still flying long after their civilian counterparts have been scrapped or sent to the boneyard.Tom Warshaw
