Bosses identify fireman in a spin
    Link to story

FIRE chiefs believe they have identified a fireman who was filmed being spun in a tumble dryer while on duty.

They also know the station where the incident - revealed in the Manchester Evening News at the weekend - took place.

County Fire Officer Barry Dixon has condemned the prank as "reckless."

It is understood the fireman in question is currently on leave, but will face an initial informal interview when he returns to work.

At that interview, he is likely to be cautioned about possibility disciplinary action.

He is then expected to undergo a formal interview with representatives from his union.

The video, obtained by the M.E.N. and thought to have been taken on a mobile phone, shows a man in a firefighter's uniform getting into an industrial drying machine which he packs with clothes to protect himself.

He tells his colleagues: "As soon as I say, let me out."

One officer says: "Get your head near the front . . . get yourself forward a bit."

The machine is then switched on and the fireman is turned over inside it several times as others laugh hysterically.

The footage was sent to fire bosses and members of the fire authority.

The video has prompted a fierce debate on the this website, with some readers horrified at the unsafe prank and others condemning fire bosses for getting in a spin over nothing.

As well as breaching health and safety policy, the fireman at the centre of the incident may be disciplined for bringing the reputation of the fire service into disrepute. The officer in charge of the station could also face action.

Fire chief Mr Dixon said: "A full investigation has begun and initial information would suggest that it is one of our personnel.

"The health and safety of our personnel is a priority and we see the investigation of what appears to be a reckless act as a priority."

I got to tell you...this has caused hell in the UK Fire Service... Pranks are a long tradition in the job...but with all of the political fall out from the dispute a couple of years ago this is the last thing we needed.

If htye were silly enough to film it on a mobile phone and then get caught, they get wgat was coming...everyone in the UK FS now knows how things are... this is the 'Cold War' period between the employers and employees. Each side will scream and hoot when the other trips up.

However, the Chief if Greater Manchester (a very large & busy Metro Brigade in the UK) should not have sung so loudly about this...this gives a black eye to all 60,000 UK Firefighters... most people don't give a hoot but there are so many who will pick this up and run with it and try to kick us with it...not least the employers who will see it as a 'too much time on their hands' issue. He should have sent the Local Borough Commander (Deputy Chief) down there to break a few balls instead of airing his dirty washing all over the UK and now the World.

Gtr Manchester is the first of the 63 Brigades in the UK to change the shift system and get rid of beds, making night shifts wakeful, getting crews to do Station work throughout the night between calls...what next after this?

Steve-I know you guys have had it pretty bad over there the last few years. While this prank is beyond stupid, and making a video even worse, management will use it to bash the firefighters. This will of course lead to a battle to take advantage of anything either management or firefighters do wrong. There are no winners when this happens, except the newspapers and lawyers.

        reality

Can we blame this on the surge in "reality" tv shows? Just goes to show that people will do anything for publicity.

The big trouble with this incident, apart from the fallout the crew will catch), is the issue of imitation by others.

A few years back fire crews in Merseyside were called to a job where a kid who was playing hide and seek with a friend, climed into the dryer. One of the parents, not realising, shut the door when they saw it standing open.

            You can imagine what happened.

I am very safe in believing I won't be asking the wife to book any trips to Sweden to watch this group get any prizes.
I'm not saying you're stupid. I'm saying you have bad luck when it comes to thinking.

The most important aspect of this story, to me, is not of a firehouse prank gone bad but of the way it came to everyones attention. The story I read depicted a video made by cell phone. If this is the case, then one of our brothers in blue had to have sent it to "the man". Hell of a way to protect each other isnt it!

Yeah, what if someone was trapped in a tube on a hill, when during the rescue that tube went rolling down the hill, while being heated up. Perfect prep.

                            Cheech and Chong

The last time I saw this was a in a Cheech and Chong movie. If I were the chief I would have the whole shift tested for whacky tobaccy.

You know, I did that once in my youth at the commercial laundrymat...

                              However, I was 14!

It surprises me a little to see grown men wanting to try that, and foolish enough to do it in uniform, AND on tape. This is the computer/internet generation. Regardeless of your intended distribution, stuff gets around.
