    G'day,
I'm a retired Auckland, New Zealand firefighter. (27 yrs, Station Officer - I think your equivalent rank is Lieutenant)
Thought maybe if some of you are into hiking, the outdoors or interested in a Kiwi's view of the US and its wilderness then you might be interested in this book of mine..."Dances With Marmots"
Before retiring I took 'leave of absence' from the Fire Dept., travelled to the States and hiked 2650 miles from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail, up through the desert areas and High Sierra Nevada of California and the Cascade range of Oregon and Washington, ending up in the Okanogan Forest of BC., Canada. Took me five months and was a great experience!
Anyhow, if interested, there's more info' over at Dances With Marmots
(also posted this over on the 'Fire Buff' forum before spotting 'Off duty', so hope that's ok!)
    Cheers, George

    Hi George
It sounds like you had a great time. I had a quick look at chaper one. I don't have a printer at home so I'll print it up tomorrow to have a read of it. I was in your part of the world last year and this year (Auckland last year, Sydney this year). I loved both. You've seen more of the US than I have.

    take care,

    cheffie

      Hi Cheffie,
Hope you managed to get out of the city and get to see a bit of the country.
Reckon the South Island scenery is probably the most impressive.
(one of the reasons I moved down here from Auckland)
      Cheers, George

To you kiwis i say cudos to your rugby team, they were just the better team. The wallabies were playing a horrible forwards game and gave no support to the runner. I dont think i have ever seen so many turnovers before.

For all the life of me, i cant see a firefighter going to hell. At least not for very long. We would end up putting out all the fires and annoying the devil too much.

            G'day FlyingKiwi,
I'm in Oamaru - but we could use some of Auckland's temperatures at the moment. Roll on summer!

PattyV - Thanks! 13-9 gotta be good! The AB's were their usual awesome self and always nice to see the Aussies go down - Oh dear, how sad, never mind!

Dunno - haven't had any contact with the volli's down here - had thought about joining the vols when I moved here, but thought again, and decided that after 27 yrs I'd had enough of leaping out of the pit in the early hours of the morning, or leaving my tucker half eaten on the plate.
Still miss aspects of the job, but not those bits!
