You are correct George. Colon was offered at least 36 and maybe up to 40 MILLION for THREE years. Thats darn good moola. He was a pleasure to watch this year because he was a workhorse. Sorry to see him go.
-
To add to George's comment about Bartolo Colon, it is being reported here that that was a final offer. I agree 12 mil per is way to much for him. If the fat man wants him, he can have him.

Bartolo Colon, arguably a good pitcher, but not a great pitcher, reportedly turned down 3years-$36 million from the CWS. It's going to be an interesting winter.

Steinbrenner knows what it takes to win. Money brings talent and George digs deep.

This just in:
Torre, Stottlemyre and Zimmer call it quits.
Replacements: Mazzilli, Guidry and Mattingly.
Bernie Williams, David Wells and Jorge Posada traded to Texas for Alex Rodriguez, Jeter to play third base.
Aaron Boone moved to second and Soriano to centerfield.
Vladimir Guerrero and Pudge Rodriguez were picked up on the free agent market to play right-field and fill the catchers void. "If ya can't beat 'em, sign 'em".
Speaking of free agents, the Yanks re-signed Andy Petitte than picked the bosses pocket and signed two other free agent pitchers by the names of, Randy Johnson and Bartolo Colon.
When asked why they did not persue Kevin Milwood, the GM Brian Cashman said, "George didn't want to spend too much money".Last edited by E229Lt; 10-28-2003, 04:42 PM.

My bad George, I didn't recognize the satire. I have no feelings toward either team. I really didn't care who won.
That said, there is a difference between a pitcher hitting a batter, (for the sake of argument lets assume he meant to throw at him) and a player jumping over the outfield wall to engage in a fight with an employee or fan. The former has long been considered part of the game, the latter has never been tolerated.

Nelson and Garcia fought with a guy for cheering for his team in the wrong part of the stadium. Not a smart move by the grounds keeper, but Garcia jumped the wall to get to the guy. I guess the entire Yankee bullpen couldn't defend themselves against one cheering grounds keeper.
BTW, you can't possibly believe your version of this. There is not one shred of evidence, particularly evidence other than "statements" from Yankee-hating Red Sox fans, that gives the slightest bit if credence to this version. If this was an attack, the moron groundskeeper would still be in the hospital.
Me blinded by loyalty? Possibly. Others blinded by Yankee hatred? Absolutely.

After Pedro committed Aggravated Assault on Karim Garcia and Terroristic Threats on Posada, the Tankee fans will never accept that arrogant piece of garbage in pinstripes.
Don't talk to me about Nelson and Garcia. They didn't assault anyone. They got into a fight with an idiot.
and you call that aggravated assault? The jails would be full of baseball players if things were judged by your standards.

Once again you are blinded by your loyalty.

I will admit to only watching the ALCS and the World Series, and it seemed to be a fairly consistent remark from the announcers about Soriano's batting troubles. I tend to follow local minor league baseball more.

Might be a dumb question, but it's a serious one, what does a "bench coach" (Bench coach Don Zimmer) do?
In the regular season, Soriano hit .292, had an on-base pct. of .332 and a slugging pct. of .525. He hit 38 HR, 91 RBI and had 35 SB.
True, he had a horrible post season. But I'll take him on my team any day.
A bench coach is akin to a offensive or defensive coordaintor in football. Except he does both.

NEW YORK (AP) - Coming up short on the field means tumult off
the field for the New York Yankees.
Instead of playing Game 7 of the World Series on Sunday, they
started to stream in slowly to pack up their gear and ponder what
is likely to be a tumultuous five months until the 2004 season
opener against Tampa Bay on April 5.
The frustration that followed the six-game loss to Florida was
clear following a season of turmoil and repeated prodding by owner
George Steinbrenner. And it appears manager Joe Torre will lose at
least one and perhaps both of the key aides who have been with him
since he took over the team before the 1996 season.
Bench coach Don Zimmer said after Saturday night's 2-0 loss that
he is quitting, angry with Steinbrenner's treatment of him.
Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre doesn't know if he wants to
return, saying he wants to talk it over with his family.
Stottlemyre, who has spoken of possible retirement at the end of
previous seasons, made clear this was the most difficult of his
eight years as the Yankees pitching coach.
"I feel personally abused because of some things that happened
during the course of the season," Stottlemyre said as he headed
out of the ballpark Sunday.
Asked why, Stottlemyre cited the April decision by the team to
send Jose Contreras to the minor league complex in Tampa, Fla.,
which came after Torre and Stottlemyre told the pitcher he was
going to Triple-A Columbus.
"I took offense to where Joe and I said one thing, and the
other thing was done," Stottlemyre said.
Torre has said in recent days that he hopes to speak with Zimmer
after emotions calm. Stottlemyre didn't think Zimmer could be
swayed to stay on.
"Zim has been very hurt," he said. "He seems to be dead set
on what he's going to do."
Zimmer said Sunday he wouldn't return to Yankee Stadium.
"I guess you have to say it's a tough way to leave, but that's
what I want to do," he said. "I ain't coming back to work for
Steinbrenner or be around him."
Torre was in his office Sunday but didn't speak with reporters,
preferring to wait a few days.
Steinbrenner left town, according to spokesman Howard
Rubenstein, but issued a statement that was a harbinger.
"Of course, I was disappointed, but we will be meeting soon to
make whatever changes are needed to bring back a stronger, better
team for New York and our fans," he said. "You can count on it."
Rubenstein said Steinbrenner could not be reached for his
reaction to Zimmer's claims of mistreatment.
Steinbrenner repeatedly has backed Torre, who led the team to
four World Series titles from 1996 to 2000 but none since.
Steinbrenner has not given a similar support to general manager
Brian Cashman, whose contract extends through the 2004 season.
Hitting coach Rick Down appears to be a likely goner following a
World Series in which the Yankees hit .140 (7-for-50) with runners
in scoring position - .077 if you don't include Derek Jeter
(2-for-4) and Hideki Matsui (2-for-7).
"It's a tough place to work," Down said. "Not everybody can
deal with it. But I'm not going to walk away from anything."
While some teams may be happy with winning pennants, the
Yankees' 39th AL championship left them with an empty feeling -
with the team's World Series title total stuck on 26, Steinbrenner
has become even more restless in the past year.
Stottlemyre still had trouble believing what had happened.
"I woke up and had to slap myself - we didn't have a game
today," he said. "It was kind of a shock."
New York faces some big decisions. Andy Pettitte, 3-0 in the
postseason before Saturday's loss, is eligible for free agency. The
Yankees have options on David Wells and Antonio Osuna, and a mutual
option with Heredia. Hammond, whose innings decreased in the second
half, has no idea what his role is, if any.
Available on the free agent market are outfielders such as Gary
Sheffield, Vladimir Guerrero and Mike Cameron, and pitchers such as
Bartolo Colon.
Who will replace Roger Clemens and possibly Pettitte and Wells
in the rotation?
Will Bernie Williams, who has lost much of his range, be moved
from center field?
Will Alfonso Soriano be moved from second base to the outfield?
Will Jason Giambi need major knee surgery?
And will Jeter require shoulder and thumb surgery?
"I think we have more questions as an organization to answer
this time of year than usually," Stottlemyre said.
