  • The Fan, The Cubbies, The Apology

Statement released Wednesday by Cubs fan Steve Bartman, who
deflected a foul ball in Game Six of the National League
    Championship Series:

"There are few words to describe how awful I feel and what I
have experienced within these last 24 hours.
"I've been a Cubs fan all my life and fully understand the
relationship between my actions and the outcome of the game. I had
my eyes glued on the approaching ball the entire time and was so
caught up in the moment that I did not even see Moises Alou
(MOY'-sehs ah-LOO'), much less that he may have had a play.
"Had I thought for one second that the ball was playable or had
I seen Alou approaching I would have done whatever I could to get
out of the way and give Alou a chance to make the catch.
"To Moises Alou, the Chicago Cubs organization, Ron Santo,
Ernie Banks, and Cub fans everywhere I am so truly sorry from the
bottom of this Cubs fan's broken heart.
"I ask that Cub fans everywhere redirect the negative energy
that has been vented towards my family, my friends, and myself into
the usual positive support for our beloved team on their way to
    being National League champs."

    And now.....wait til next year!

This makes me sick. I am turning in my Cub's Fan Card and will never watch another game again.

Would Alou have caught the ball? Maybe, maybe not. But to blame this guy, who was within his rights to be reaching for a FOUL ball for what happened after, is a disgrace. The Cubs may be cursed, but this year, the curse is cry-baby-blame-somebody-else-for-my-incompetnace CRAP.

So it was his fault that Prior got rattled and walked the batter? It was his fault Gonzales booted the next grounder? BS. The Cubs fell apart these last two games because that is what the Cubs do. I seen it all my life. And I shall see it NO MORE.

It really is a shame that all if this happened. And now that they Cubs are out of it, I hope this guy stays safe. There's too many die hard fans out there that are looking for someone to blame other than the team and this guy just fits the bill. I am not downing Chicago or the fans, there are nuts everywhere.

I am still mad that they put lights in Wrigley though. That ruined the place for me.

                      What about the others

For all those Cub fans (and even those that are not), why do you keep blaming this loyal fan for attempting to catch a foul ball. I agree that Alou may have had a play on it, but to take it out on the fan is just plain wrong.

I hope that if you ever hear of some type of comment about this fan that you will take note that there were about 4 other fans reaching for the same ball. Why is he the only one singled out? Why not start coming down on the others?

Alou had a right to be mad initally, but he came to his senses and realized he was wrong for blaming the fan. I wish that all the people who blame the fan for the Cubs loss take a lesson from Alou.

If you want to blame someone specific, why not Rameriez. Who should have cleanly fielded a hit to him and start a double play, or at least a force out.

I have been a Cub fan for as long as I can remember. I think that they did great, and I wish them the best of luck next year. I will be watching.

Here, here! He wasn't the only one attempting to catch the ball...

                          Exactly!

And how many runs scored because of this? And how many runs scored in later plays?

The final score was 8-3...8 people didn't score because of this play.
