This is a "no Kidding" Story:

Three injured when carriage horse bolts

Times Colonist Tuesday, September 16, 2003

Three people received minor injuries Monday when a draft horse pulling a carriage bolted near Beacon Hill Park.

The horse was spooked by the noise from a grass trimmer operated on a lawn off Beacon Street as the carriage proceeded down the street from Douglas Street.

The carriage ran into a telephone pole. The driver and two women passengers were taken to hospital for treatment of bruises.

The horse, a black Percheron named Luke, "was just frightened," said Diane Donohue, manager of Victoria Carriage Tours. The horse received stitches to close a wound to one leg.

Donohue praised the actions of the driver for steering the horse in a such a way as to minimize the potential for damage and injury.

A shaft on the wagon was broken and rubber was stripped from the wheels. Estimated damage was $100.

Donohue said eight-year-old Luke will be "on vacation" for a few weeks, but is expected to be back on the streets.
