  • Sad Day for Calgary - Fire at Historic Fort Calgary - probably arson

    Date: Sat Aug 16 09:05:12 2003
    Subject: Fire - Fort Calgary
    From: John Conley

CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

    At 06:12, 9-1-1 Dispatch received a call from a taxi on 9th
Avenue reporting flames at Fort Calgary. Upon arrival, crews
from #1 and #2 Stations found a portion of the east palisade
fully involved. The mode of attack was immediately
defensive, meaning that the fire was surrounded by crews and
flooded with water and exposures were protected.

The portion of the Fort that was ablaze was constructed using
logs. As a result of this heavy, dense fuel, the fire was
extremely hot and flames were high. Extension of the fire to
the adjacent 1888 Barracks building and surrounding dry,
grassy areas was of great concern. The 1888 Barracks
sustained superficial exposure damage including smoke and
water damage and cracked windows. Both fire officials and
Fort Calgary Society personnel were very relieved that this
    structure was saved.

The section of the Fort that was lost is referred to as the
1875 Fort - about 30m of the palisade as well as connecting
structures that were replicas of the hospital, flag pole,
quarter-master store, and carpenter shop, lived in by the
NWMP when the Fort was first built. Some tools and artifacts
were also lost in the fire.

Twenty-six firefighters and fire personnel were on scene to
battle the blaze. Arson investigators remain at the site to
conduct their investigation which will determine cause and
    value of this historical loss.

CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

The Joint Forces Arson Squad remains on scene at Fort
Calgary. They are classifying the cause of the fire as
suspicious in nature and will be sifting through ashes for
    most of the day.

Although many of the artifacts lost in the fire are priceless
in value, the dollar damage loss to this historic site is
estimated to be at least $300,000.

Final results of the investigation will be released when
    available.
