The "bare" facts of the matter
Retirement party gag put fire engine out of service twice
jaccft2
JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A firefighter has filed a complaint after
his station had to take a fire engine out of service because a
co-worker volunteered for a faux strip tease gag at a June
retirement party.
Firefighter Curtis James said shutting down the engine because
of a lack of staff could put lives at risk. He recently filed a
complaint with the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health
Administration.
At least five city employees participated in the strip act at a
retirement party for a female co-worker. The male dancers wore
masks and stripped to their boxers and boots, said Linda Ramsey,
secretary to Fire Chief Ken Lay.
A city e-mail was sent out requesting volunteers for the gag.
The No. 43 fire engine that James usually drives at Station No.
4 was parked twice, once so the firefighter involved in the gag
could meet with the party's planner, and again the day of the
party.
Lay said he didn't feel anyone's life was in danger and is upset
James went over his head by calling TOSHA before speaking with him.
Jackson Mayor Charles Farmer sent an e-mail to all city
employees saying retirement parties are no longer allowed while
employees are working.
