  • Personal Privacy - No B/S

    Please Read Carefully

If you go to www.google.com and type in your telephone number it will actually pull up directions to your house. There is a way to have your number removed. Please read below. Many people are unaware of this danger. Go to www.google.com then type in your phone number (including area code) and click on Google Search. If your phone number is listed, it will show your name and address and give you two map options: Yahoo and MapQuest. Check it out and see how accurate the map is to your home.
Any person wishing to discover the physical location of a phone number, be it a home or business address, could use this feature to locate a physical street address, and receive directions on how to get there from anywhere in the country. In the age of the internet communication we all know the dangers of this -- for adults and CHILDREN!

People you do not even know will not only have your name and phone number but they will also have complete and accurate directions to your home.

Google has made available an option that will allow anyone to REMOVE their telephone number from the database that is linked to the mapping feature.

You will first need to check if your number is listed in this manner by attempting a search-entering your full telephone with area code. If the number appears in the mapping database, an icon
resembling a telephone will appear next to the results. Clicking on this icon will take you to
a page containing a description of the service, and a link to request your number be removed from the database.

So far unlisted numbers and cell phone numbers, do not show up.

PLEASE, TAKE A MOMENT TO CHECK YOUR OWN PHONE NUMBERS & FORWARD THIS ON TO YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS - YOUR LOVED ONES WILL NOT MIND GETTING THIS EMAIL
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Just tried it. It works, only the maps they pull up are wrong. They don't come within a mile of my house probably because their database has my zip code wrong.

But removing it from the database is a temporary fix until they load it again. You need to make your number unlisted as well.

I know a ton of people who are abandoning their home telephone service altogether and using cellular exclusively. This would also solve the problem.

                Just GOTTA stir this pot!

If you're really worried about your privacy, google is nothing.

Many cities and counties across the country have gone to aerial mapping integrated with GIS systems for tax assessment purposes and that information is readily available.

Go to Mapquest and type in an address in a major US city - I know Phoenix is in the system. When you get the map look of the aerial photo tab. In some cases you can zoom right down to the individual house. Some jurisdictions around the country that don't make the maps available to a company like mapquest but have it available as public information either on their own websites or in their property tax offices.

There are 8 million different websites that allow you to do reverse lookup of a telephone number. Go to the website your telephone company uses for an online phonebook. I'm willing to be they have this feature on there. I know SBC and AT&T do.

SBC uses www.smartpages.com and AT&T has www.anywho.com for reverse lookup.

Go to Google and do a search on "Reverse Lookup" and see all the different sites.

I'll try many things for a lark, and this was one of them. First of all, our number came up "file not found" - not sure why because we are 'listed' but it may because we are "Canadian" LOL. However for giggles and grins, I submitted the Fire Dept number.... this is what I got..

Fire Department : 100 MILE HOUSE FIRE DEPARTMENT
PO Box : PO BOX 340
                    Address : HORSE LAKE ROAD
                    City : 100 MILE HOUSE
                    Postal Code : V0K 2E0
                    Telephone : (250)395-464
                    Fax : (250)395-3071
Page 1 of 74 Fire Department Complete List

Unfortunately, 100 Mile House is about 300 miles away!!! And on the Mainland It also took me to a Fire Department Listing link, and eventually after scrolling down through the entire provincial listing, I did find Malahat FD at http://www.mcaws.gov.bc.ca/firecom/f...edept_list.pdf

Worked for me. My dad's name, our address, and two maps with a link for driving directions.

While this is certainly an uncomfortable revelation, this is no different than looking up a number in a phone book, cole's directory, or voter registration and tax books released publicly by any town or city in the United States.

As for the mapquest links, it only makes it easier than to have to type in mapquest or yahoo.

I agree, but there used to be a time when if you wanted info, you actually had to work for it.
