  • Bin Laden -- a Brand You Can Trust
GENEVA (Reuters) - Swiss authorities have ruled that a
Geneva-based half-brother of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden
has the right to use the family name as a trademark.
But businessman Yeslam Bin Ladin said he had no immediate
plans to bring out any goods under the name.
"I don't intend to exploit the brand Bin Ladin commercially
for the time being, but registering it will prevent others from
using my name to bad effect," the daily Tribune de Geneve
    quoted him as saying.
In July 2002 the Federal Intellectual Property Institute
revoked the trademark which it had initially granted in August
2001 -- a month before al Qaeda launched suicide plane attacks
on the United States that killed 3,000 people.
In revoking it, the Swiss authorities argued that the
trademark could "morally wound" Swiss and disrupt public order.

    • Naked Frolic Lands Prosecutor in Jail
KEY WEST, Fla. (Reuters) - A drunken Florida prosecutor who
streaked across a motel parking lot and mistakenly jumped into
a stranger's car landed in the slammer, a state attorney's
      office spokesman said on Wednesday.
After tossing back a few drinks with colleagues last
weekend, Monroe County assistant prosecutor Albert "A.J."
Tasker, 28, stripped off his clothes as a prank and headed
toward what he thought was a friend's vehicle.
But Tasker jumped into the back seat of the wrong car,
where a woman was waiting for her boyfriend. The woman
screamed, the boyfriend arrived and Key West police arrested
      Tasker.
"The devil made him do it," said Matt Helmerick, spokesman
for the Monroe County state attorney in Key West.
Tasker, who was hired in December, was jailed on
misdemeanor charges of disorderly intoxication and exposure of
sexual organs. He was released on bond and is on an unpaid
leave of absence from his job pending an internal
      investigation.

      • February 28, 2005 -- A man and woman in adjoining cells at a Turkish prison drilled a 3.6-inch hole through the wall, enabling them to have sexual relations that produced a child. But while Seylan Corduk, 40, and Kadriye Fikret Oget, 27 — both serving time for planting a bomb in an Istanbul market — will be parents, they'll also be jailbirds a bit longer, after being given more time for damaging public property.

        • March 1, 2005 -- A gang of thieves called the "bathroom bandits" is loose. Cops say they enter public rest rooms, peer under stalls to see whose pants are down, then quickly reach under and steal their wallet. The victims sometimes see what's going on, but stumble and fall over their pants as they try to give chase. Officers hope to flush out some suspects.

          • Dung...you say?

I Don't Care What It Cures, I'm Not Taking It...
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Alongside life-size posters of Hindu
nationalist leaders, Indian political activists can now buy
lotions, potions and pills to cure anything from cancer to
hysteria to piles -- all made from cow urine or dung.
A new goratna (cow products) stall at the Bharatiya Janata
Party's (BJP) souvenir shop is rapidly outselling dry political
tracts, badges, flags and saffron-and-green plastic wall clocks
with the face of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.
"You won't believe how quickly some of the products sold
out," says Manoj Kumar, who runs the souvenir shop along with
his brother, Sanjeev, at the BJP headquarters in a plush
central New Delhi neighborhood. "The constipation medicine is a
            hot seller."
But the biggest seller is a "multi-utility pill" that
claims to cure anything from diabetes to piles to "ladies'
            diseases."
            "It's a miraculous cure" the container declares. A month's
supply costs a little over $1.

            • BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Forty-six young men preparing to take a
military school entrance exam were caught trying to cheat using
mobile phones taped to their bodies and hidden in their shoes and
underwear, an army official said Monday.
The men, aged 18-24, were among nearly 30,000 who showed up
Sunday morning at Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok to take the
test to vie for 2,000 spots in the one-year military program.
Officials searched the students and discovered the phones after
some shied away from guards with handheld metal detectors as they
              entered the testing rooms.
"When they took off their shoes, we found the cell phones,"
said Army Spokesman Col. Acra Tiprot. "We questioned them, and
they admitted many of their friends were also inside, so we closed
the rooms and checked their clothes and shoes."
Army officials suspect the test-takers' parents had
foreknowledge of the plan and paid for the phones.
"The parents wanted their children to pass the test, so they
believed the people behind this," he said.
The person tipping off the cheaters is "likely a kid who has a
high IQ or is a good student, went in to take the test, remembered
the test information and sent the answers by code," Acra said.
The suspected cheaters met Saturday to learn how to read the
codes they would receive by mobile phone, he said.

                • damn, 40/35 beat me to it

Breast for sale: $11,000 and rising
A stripper puts one of her most obvious assets up for bid on eBay. Guess what: it's in demand.
                  March 3, 2005: 12:42 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Giving new meaning to the term "big news," a famous stripper is selling an oversized breast on eBay.

In an ongoing auction, the bidding price has risen from an initial $37 to more than $11,000. The auction is scheduled to conclude on March 5.

The breast -- or, to be technical about it, a big glob of silicone -- belongs to dancer Tawny Peaks and has a storied history.

Measuring a full 69HH, Peaks once had just about the biggest breasts around. But when the orbs became the subject of a 1998 lawsuit, they grew even larger than life.

Peaks was a dancer at the Diamond Dolls nightclub in Clearwater, Florida. While at a bachelor party there, a patron claimed he was given a whiplash injury by Peaks, who had been swinging her breasts across his face at the time.

He said they were "like two cement blocks," according to Reuters.

The suit attracted national attention, and was finally settled by former New York mayor Ed Koch, ruling in a binding arbitration decision on "The People's Court" TV show.

After a female bailiff examined Peaks, Koch ruled that the breasts were, in fact, just breasts -- too soft to be capable of inflicting harm. No damages were awarded.

The notoriety from the suit briefly made Peaks famous, culminating with a cover spread in Playboy magazine. A few years ago, she retired to become a homemaker, and had the implants removed.

Now the mother of three, Peaks says she decided to sell the implant after coming across it in a box of keepsakes and mementos from her show business days.

She didn't need it anymore. Besides, it takes up quite a bit of space.

                    • March 5, 2005 -- It was a pretty tongue-in-cheek alibi. Brenna Guy of Indianapolis claimed the Breathalyzer test that led to her DWI arrest was invalid because she has a tongue stud — and under state law no foreign substance can be placed in a suspect's mouth in the 20 minutes before the test. The Indiana Supreme Court didn't swallow her argument — it noted the stud was in her mouth for more than 20 minutes before the test.

March 6, 2005 -- Doctors treating a retired schoolteacher in Poland for a headache found a 5-inch knife blade imbedded in his head. The blade was spotted just under Leonard Woronowicz's ear, as doctors X-rayed his head to see if he had fractured his skull in a fall in his kitchen. Instead, Woronowicz, 61, had landed on a knife, which snapped off in his head. "My head hurt a bit, but I was convinced that it was from the fall," he said. The blade did not cause any major lasting damage.

A Mansfield, Ohio, woman was arrested and jailed for failure to file a 2001 city income tax bill totaling 96 cents.

Markeeta Gould, 26, earned $55 that year, working part-time as a nurse's aide. She says when she received a letter from the Income Tax Division of the city finance director's office last year about missed filing, she explained the situation to a city employee who told her not to bother with the trifling amount.

"She said, 'If you only made $55, we won't worry about it,' " Gould told the Mansfield News Journal.

But, on Feb. 19, she was arrested in front of her children.

The trouble began that day when Gould reported a break-in.

"The officer who came out said, 'Do you know you have a warrant out for your arrest?'" she said.

                          Gould was shocked.

"I had to call my brother to come and get my kids," she said. "I bailed myself out of jail."

She pleaded innocent to the charges of failure to file a tax return. Her bench trial is scheduled for March 15.

Finance Director Sandra Converse told the paper the city has a mandatory income tax return filing requirement for working-age residents – whether they earned income or not. She says her employees repeatedly tried to get Gould to file the return, and tried to contact her five times by mail, phone or in person between Oct. 10, 2003, and Dec. 8, 2004.

Converse said Gould's initial court date was Jan. 7, but she didn't show.

Gould said she was not informed of the court date.

When the city brings charges, the amount owed is not the issue; it's non-compliance with rules everyone else has to follow, Converse said.

"We don't know what people owe if they do not file," she said. "We wouldn't be doing our jobs if we didn't enforce this (filing rule). Sometimes people owe quite a bit of money and that's why they haven't filed."

Gould said she was embarrassed to be arrested.

"I'm a mother and I'm a law-abiding citizen," she said. "I paid my taxes every year before and I paid my taxes every year after. With me getting arrested, I could lose my job."
‎"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

                          • March 7, 2005 -- A frantic mom raced into a firehouse clutching a locked suitcase — with her 3-year-old son inside. Cops in London say Tiger Fawley got trapped when he climbed inside and the lid slammed shut. His mother, Donna, was a nervous wreck until firefighters pried the case open, but Tiger remained as cool as a cucumber. "He's a little comedian. When his sister, Scarlett, asked him if he needed anything, he replied, 'I could do with a torch [flashlight]," she said.

                            • WOW!

Casino Company Buys 69-HH Stripper's Implant
MIAMI (Reuters) - A former stripper once cleared of
battering a customer with her enormous breasts sold one of her
silicone implants on eBay to the same company that recently
bought a grilled cheese sandwich said to bear the image of the
                              Virgin Mary.
Internet casino company GoldenPalace.com won the bid for
the infamous implant at $16,766 on Saturday, according to the
eBay Web site and the seller, known professionally as Tawny
Peaks. She advertised a 69-HH bra size before her implants were
                              removed in 1999.
There was no word yet on what the online gambling company
planned to do with the implant.
Last year GoldenPalace paid $28,000 for a 10-year-old,
partly eaten grilled cheese sandwich with an image many likened
to the Virgin Mary. The company sent the sandwich on a national
publicity tour, encased in clear plastic.
Peaks has retired from the entertainment business, and put
one of the implants up for auction last week. She said she was
overwhelmed and exhausted by the flood of e-mailed bids.

                              • Man Facing 26 Years for Lying Wins Hearing
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A California man sent to prison
for 26 years for lying on a driver's license application won a
new hearing on Friday in a case that revived debate over the
state's "three strikes" law, which imposes lengthy terms on
                                repeat offenders.
Santos Reyes was convicted of perjury for filling out a
driver's license under a cousin's name in 1997. Convicted of
burglary in 1981 and armed robbery in 1987, he was sentenced to
26-years-to-life. Reyes appealed, arguing such a sentence
                                constituted cruel and unusual punishment.
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals based in San
Francisco ordered the case returned to a lower court to review
                                Reyes's previous crimes.
"But for Reyes' armed robbery conviction, Reyes would
appear to have a plausible case for relief," Judge Harry
Pregerson wrote. "Unfortunately, the circumstances under which
Reyes committed the robbery are not sufficiently developed in
the record for us to determine whether the offense was a 'crime
against a person' or involved violence."
The case is the latest in a heated debate over California's
"three strikes" law, which imposes prison terms of 25 years to
life on those convicted of a third felony. Opponents of the law
say large sentences for minor crimes unfairly target small-time
criminals and overburden the prison system.
