      Wood you believe it?

PASSAIC, N.J. (Reuters) - Believers are flocking to
a rundown street in New Jersey to see a tree stump they say has
the form of the Virgin Mary and is a divine sign of hope for
      the impoverished neighborhood.
"Miracle on Madison Street, that's what I would have called
it," said Hector Cruz, who visited the roughly two-foot-high
stump Wednesday in Passaic, New Jersey, a
largely Hispanic city about 15 miles west of New York.
The piece of wood, whose shape believers say resembles a
veiled Virgin Mary with a bowed head, was noticed by passers-by
over the weekend on state-owned land alongside a street that
residents say is a hangout for illegal drug users.
Since then, a steady stream of visitors have left candles,
flowers and handwritten notes and prayers at the site. "It has
her form, definitely," said Jackie Cohrs. "It looks like her."
Marian Ruiz said she and her mother first spotted the
stump, etched with ax marks and surrounded with litter, while
      driving by Saturday.
"Where it's located, it's a bad area around here," she
      said. "It's a sign."
A spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson was
not immediately available for comment. But a spokesman told
local media the church would have to learn more about the case
before investigating whether it is a miracle.
Five years ago in nearby Jersey City, word of an image of
the Virgin Mary on a freezer door drew people to a supermarket.
That image, said to be a silhouette of a woman in a hooded
      garment, lasted four days.

October 23, 2003 --Students at a top Canadian university have created the world's first college class in bondage. They say they dreamed up "Bondage 101" at the University of Victoria in British Columbia because of the growing curiosity on campus involving sex with ropes and knots. Bondage 101 will give instruction about "the safe use of ropes in a sexualized context," said class spokesperson Sheri,

                Judge gives virgin bride annulment
                By TONY BLAIS, SUN MEDIA

EDMONTON -- A still virginal woman who tied the knot with the hubby from hell has been granted an annulment by a judge.

According to a Court of Queen's Bench decision released yesterday, the Calgary couple, both in their 20s, were married in a ceremony in Cowtown before friends and family in December 2002, after an eight-month courtship.

However, at an Oct. 6 hearing before Justice Marsha Erb, the unhappy bride said trouble started in the wedding planning.

"She said that it became apparent the defendant's mother controlled his life," wrote Erb, adding that reality surfaced when she learned her mother-in-law planned to buy them a Calgary home so they could all live together when they came from Ontario for "extended" visits.

She demanded her fiance stand up to his mother and he assured her he would cut the proverbial apron strings.

                'STRANGE BEHAVIOUR'

Then the mother-in-law convinced her son to change the reception menu without telling his bride-to-be.

The insensitive groom also pretended to lose a special ring she gave him after the wedding rehearsal. Then he "found" it.

"Despite those red flags, the wedding took place," said Erb, adding the woman remained confident she had her man.

"But, as they were walking out of the church following the ceremony, (he) again told her he had lost her ring."

The marriage was not consummated on the wedding night.

As the newlyweds departed on a honeymoon to Mexico, the man's "strange behaviour" continued, the judgement states. The bride told court she had, by this time, "developed a complete aversion" to her new husband and asked hotel staff for a separate room.

In court, the woman produced a letter from her doctor attesting to her virginity.

Erb granted the annulment, ruling she accepts the woman has an aversion to her husband which has prevented and will always prevent her from consummating the marriage.

"She simply couldn't stand the defendant because of the emotional wounds he inflicted upon her and which he promised would change once they were married. They did not change, but worsened immediately," said Erb.

                  Mega-Bites

1-year-old child bitten 30 times by fellow tots at nursery
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) - Fourteen small children attacked a
1-year-old boy at a nursery in the Croatian port city of Rijeka,
biting the toddler at least 30 times, a doctor said Thursday.
The child sustained more than 30 deep bite marks all over his
body, including his face, in Monday's incident. It happened after a
nanny briefly stepped outside the playroom to change another
                  child's diaper.
"Biting between young children is not uncommon, but I have
never seen anything like this," said Dr. Sime Vuckov, the head of
pediatrics at the Rijeka municipal hospital, who treated the
                  victim.
A police investigation was under way, but what prompted the
children to turn on Frane Simic remained unclear.
Psychologist Bruna Profaca, who has 17 years of experience with
toddlers, agreed that it was common for children to get irritable
and violent, but not on such a wide and organized scale.
"Still, it could have easily have been a fight over a toy or
something," Profaca said. "Children do not have the tools to
resolve conflicts and they tend to respond aggressively. The main
thing is not to leave them unattended."
While the scars were expected to heal, Vuckov said.
The boy's father said he was considering suing the nanny in
                  charge.

Students learn lesson the hard way......?

Stiff discipline after UK schoolboys' Viagra prank
LONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Six British schoolboys were
rushed to hospital after taking the erection-enhancing drug
Viagra at lunchtime for a dare, the school said on Thursday.
Forest School in Winnersh, southern England said paramedics
were called after a fellow student told teachers about the
                    13-year-olds' prank.
"It is believed that a pupil brought the tablets in from
home into the all-boys school and shared them with five
friends," the local education authority said in a statement.
The Sun newspaper quoted a source at the school as saying:
"By the time the afternoon lessons began, there was no hiding
                    what they had done."
Paramedics took the six squirming boys to the nearby Royal
Berkshire Hospital, where they were monitored until the effects
                    wore off.
"The school has a strict no drugs policy and a pupil will be
temporarily excluded for actions which placed other pupils at
                    risk," the education authority added.

Fisherman's lucky bite gives Briton his teeth back
LONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - A British holidaymaker who lost
his false teeth while swimming off Crete was reunited with them
two weeks later after fishermen caught them in their nets, The
                      Times newspaper reported on Thursday.
Don Masey, 59, lost his teeth as he swam back to shore on
                      the Greek holiday island.
"I thought it would be quicker to do the crawl stroke," he
told the paper. "The problem with that is you have to suck and
blow. So I sucked, and then when I blew, I blew my teeth out."
Despite sending his children out snorkelling in search of
them, Masey failed to find the errant gnashers before returning
to Britain at the end of his holiday.
But two weeks later, fishermen dragged up the teeth in their
nets and took them to a local bar to ask if anyone in the
                      village had lost them.
When someone told them about a toothless Englishman seen in
the resort, the fishermen went to a tour operator handling
                      holidaymakers from Britain.
The tour operator forwarded the dentures to a travel agency
in Britain, which sent them on to Masey.
"I got them back on Saturday and Sunday dinner was the best
meal of my life," he said.

                        • October 24, 2003 --Six naughty English schoolboys popped Viagra at lunch - and were caught when fellow students giggled at the obvious results. "By the time afternoon lessons began, there was no hiding what they had done," a staffer at the Forest School in Winnersh said. One of the boys, all 12 and 13, admitted that he and his pals took the pills, which one of the youngsters had swiped from his dad's medicine cabinet. The six were taken by ambulance to a hospital, where they stayed until the effects wore off.

                          • I can see the teacher saying this....

"Are those roll of coins in your pants pockets, or are you students really happy and excited to be in my classroom?"
‎"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

Turns out he was the victim of identity theft. "Must have been rapid-fire dialing," said an AT&T exec.
