    • February 8, 2005 -- Wanna stay trim? Forget the diet books and gym membership — you may be better off just brushing your teeth more often, a Japanese study says. In a survey of 14,000 people, researchers at the University of Tokyo found those who managed to stay slim tended to brush after every meal, while overweight men sometimes went more than a day without brushing. They say the brushing itself isn't a fat-burning exercise, but rather a sign that a person is more careful about his health.

      • This story's snow joke.

February 8, 2005 -- Romanian firefighters put out a blaze in an apartment — by throwing snowballs through the window. When crews in Sibiu couldn't get close to the blaze because it was so intense, Fire Chief Florian Chioar ordered everybody to pack snowballs and keep throwing them until he told them to stop. It worked. "We put out the fire in about 30 minutes," he said.

            • February 8, 2005 -- COLUMBIA, S.C. - Dozens of birds, drunk from eating holly berries, crashed into the glass of an office building and died earlier this week. "It was like an Alfred Hitchcock movie," worker Denise Wilkinson said. "It was spooky. You could hear them where they flew into the glass." Warm weather and an ample supply of berries attracted hundreds of cedar waxwings into the enclosed courtyard of the three-story building Tuesday, The birds began getting drunk on the berries. They got so loopy that some were falling off branches and others were slamming into the glass walls that enclose the courtyard, said Burgess Mills, the building's owner. About half of the 100 birds that slammed into the building died, workers said. Groundskeepers have tried to help the birds by putting tape on windows or nets over the holly trees to keep them from eating the berries, Mills said.

              • February 12, 2005 -- A driving drill in which students slowly drove forward and backward went awry when two students' cars collided, and one suddenly backed into instructor Patricia Erwin, 64, of DeKalb, Ga. The teacher was pinned under the car for 15 minutes. Erwin was listed in stable condition in a hospital yesterday.

Others chuckle at boys' 6-foot-tall work in New York state
                  Feb. 11, 2005
GLEN AUBREY, N.Y. - An explicit snow sculpture along a rural road near Binghamton had some drivers doing a double-take this week.
The much-larger-than-life depiction of male genitals was on display for several days in a front yard in Glen Aubrey.
One neighbor, Bob Hodges, told radio station WNBF that “it was the talk of the town for awhile.”
Hodges said many people who saw the 6-foot-tall display just chuckled. But the artwork provoked a frosty reaction from one woman, who called the Broome County Sheriff’s Department to complain.
A deputy who went to the home was told by a woman that the unconventional display was the work of her sons. She promised she’d have her sons take care of it.
The sculpture was gone the next day.

"This is even worse than last year," said the distraught homeowner, "when someone broke in and stole my new security system..."

                    • February 14, 2005 -- There's not much of a social life in the Nebraska town of Monowi — it's got a population of 1.
Over the years, residents have either died or moved from the desolate community, which is about three hours from Omaha, and the only person left is 71-year-old Elsie Eiler, who lives in a trailer.

She grants herself her own liquor license, collects taxes from herself — "it's a matter of cents, really" — and runs the town library, which folks from neighboring areas occasionally visit.
