  • January 8, 2005 -- A Florida city will pay nearly $20,000 to a stripper whose business they tried to shut down.
Key West tried to put exotic dancer Christy Sweet's lap dance emporium out of business, first granting it an adult entertainment license and then drastically tightening regulations. The city's lawyer said they agreed to pay Sweet because "she was going to win" in court. No word on whether she'll get the money one dollar at a time.

    • January 9, 2005 -- A second-grader was ordered by a museum security guard to stop sketching her own versions of some of history's greatest paintings because she was violating copyright laws. The security guard was mistaken, but he still kept young Julia Illana from sketching works at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, TV station WTVD reported. Julia's drawings of Picasso's "Woman with Bangs" and Matisse's "Large Reclining Nude" were quite good, the station reported.

      • Ah, Old Friends Are the Best Friends...
LONDON (Reuters) - A British man was jailed on Friday for
repeatedly stabbing a long lost best friend he had traced via
the popular "Friends Reunited" Web site, and the victim says he
        still wants to be buddies.
Brendan Walsh, 27, nearly killed Noel Duff when he stabbed
him seven times in a drunken rage because he mistakenly
believed his friend had attacked his sister, Karen, whom Duff
        had started dating.
However, Walsh immediately became full of remorse, called
an ambulance and Duff was rushed to a hospital where doctors
said it was a miracle he had survived a stab wound to the
        heart.
Walsh, who was sentenced to three years in jail by London's
Old Bailey after pleading guilty to wounding with intent, had
been a close friend with Duff at school and had met up with him
again via the Web site, later introducing him to his sister.
"The victim is no longer angry at you and the remarkable
fact is that (he) even gave evidence on your behalf and said he
would like to be friends with you again," Judge David Paget
told Walsh, who was cleared of attempted murder.

        • China baby pooh-poohs diaper ad offers
BEIJING, Jan 10 (Reuters) - The family of a baby boy
formally named China's 1.3 billionth citizen has turned down
advertising deals from many companies making everything from
diapers to infant formula, state media said on Monday.
Many companies had contacted Zhang Yichi's parents, hoping
the boy would act as an "image representative" for their
products, Xinhua news agency said, quoting the Beijing Daily
          Messenger.
The family turned down all the invitations, except the
offer of insurance provided by an insurance company.
"It's lucky to be China's 1.3 billionth citizen," the
baby's father, Zhang Tong, was quoted as saying.
"But it's unnecessary to act as an image representative for
so many products, since Zhang Yichi is too young and too many
commercial activities will have negative impact on the boy's
          healthy growth."
China named Yichi, the first baby born at a Beijing
hospital on Thursday, as the 1.3 billionth person of the
world's most populous nation, more than two decades after a
one-child policy was introduced to keep its numbers in check.
Last week, five people were jailed for their roles in a
fake milk-powder scandal last year in which at least 13 babies
          died.

          • Cabin Crews Wage 'Snack Strike' Protest
ROME (Reuters) - Passengers on Alitalia's European flights
were left hungry on Friday as cabin crew refused to serve meals
and drinks in a "snack strike" to protest new working
            conditions at the Italian carrier.
The novel industrial action is a pale shadow of the all-out
strikes which brought the airline to a standstill on occasion
last year, but it has infuriated the management which is trying
to drag the state-controlled company into profit.
Passengers on national and European flights were to be
            deprived of most in-flight services between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
            (1000-1400), a union representative said. Long-haul flights
            were unaffected.
"This is an unusual way to get the attention of Alitalia
which won't mean big problems for passengers," he said.
Alitalia has threatened employees with legal action if they
participate in the action, saying the protest is illegal as it
comes during the peak Christmas period during which strikes are
            outlawed.

            • Subway Driver Faces Demotion in Turban Row
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Sikh subway driver is being forced
to wear a badge on his turban or face being demoted and sent to
the stock yards, his lawyer said on Thursday.
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which
operates the subways, told motorman Kevin Harrington to wear
the MTA badge or he cannot not work with customers.
"If he wears it, he can operate in customer service areas,
if not then he's relegated to yard duty," said Charles Seaton,
spokesman for the MTA's Transit Authority.
"I feel wearing the patch violates my religious freedom,"
Harrington, 53, told The New York Daily News. "The turban is a
sacred space, so it's like asking a priest to wear a logo on
              his vestments."
Harrington's lawyer, Amardeep Singh, said his client had
always worn the turban in his 25 years on the job, but it was
only after "9/11 that the agency tried to get its Sikh and
Muslim employees to stop wearing their turbans and hijabs."

              • Beavis you Butthead!

LAKE STEVENS, Washington (AP) - Someone in the Census Bureau may
be watching a little too much MTV.
Bevis Lake, a 2.3-hectare (5.7-acre) body of water in a forested
area about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Seattle, is now
appearing in Bureau records with a different name: Butthead Lake.
Those two names - Bevis and Butthead - are almost identical to
the 1990s MTV cartoon show "Beavis and Butt-head," which featured
a pair of slacker teenagers who watch music videos and make bad
jokes. The pair also had their own 1996 movie: "Beavis and
                Butt-Head Do America."
Someone at the Census Bureau must have gotten bored and made a
joke out of naming the lake, said Ken Brown, a land surveyor with
the state Department of Natural Resources.
"It's got to be," he said.
It's not unusual for small lakes in out-of-the-way places to
have different names because of variations in county, state or
other official records, but there are no such indications in this
                case, Brown said.
"That means someone is playing a joke, I think," Brown said.

                • Wild boar captured by security cameras chasing man around parking
                  lot in Poland
WARSAW, Poland (AP) - A man escaped unscathed after a wild boar
chased him around a hospital parking lot in southwestern Poland, a
                  news agency reported Thursday.
Cameras monitoring hospital grounds in the city of Legnica
captured a boar roaming the area early Wednesday, and then crossing
the path of an unidentified man. When the man tried to flee, the
boar pursued him around a parked car until it apparently got bored,
hospital spokesman Rafal Pilch told the news agency PAP.
"The man probably could not believe his eyes, and took a while
before he started to run," Pilch was quoted as saying. "The
animal chased him around one of the cars nearby."
The man did not need hospital treatment.
A hospital guard on duty who saw the recording confirmed the
report to The Associated Press, but could not explain how a boar
made its way into the center of the city, which has about 100,000
                  residents.

                    • Women wear the trousers in Cyprus legal review
NICOSIA, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Female lawyers in Cyprus have
won a round in the battle to reform their legal profession by
winning the right to wear trousers in court.
Until now the dress code for women was dark skirts and
jackets with white blouses but new regulations for dark "classic
cut" trousers were approved by the Supreme Court and introduced
at the beginning of the year.
"It was a popular demand among female lawyers. Trousers are
more practical," lawyer Melina Pyrgou, secretary of the Bar
                      Association, told Reuters.
"In Nicosia the courthouse is in five different buildings
and you have to dash between them. Some can find it bit awkward
                      to do that in skirts."
But lest some females take their newly-found dress freedom
too far, the Supreme Court cautions that the material and style
of the trousers should remain within the realm of good taste.

                      • Carc asses found

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) - Hungarian customs guards discovered the
carcasses of 511 rare birds hidden in the car of an Italian man
about to cross the border into Austria, police said Monday.
The guards found the birds in two coolers in the trunk of the
man's car during a routine check near Ronok, 250 kilometers (155
miles) west of Budapest on Sunday, police spokeswoman Gyorgyi
                        Natkai said in a statement.
Among the birds - valued at 5.1 million forints (US$27,000,
euro20,600 ) - were yellow wagtails, field larks, sparrows and pipits.
Police said the unnamed Italian citizen admitted to the criminal
charge of destroying nature and was released on bail while
proceedings against him continued, Natkai said.
Customs guards regularly seize the carcasses of protected birds
bound for Italy, where smugglers can sell them at high prices to
restaurants serving them as a delicacy.

January 11, 2005 -- Water levels in a well near Christiansburg, Va. shifted by at least three feet after the devastating Christmas weekend earthquake in south Asia, researchers report. About an hour after the magnitude 9 quake — and 9,600 miles away — the geologically sensitive well started oscillating. The water level then shot up and then dropped below where it had been. It took five hours for the water in the well to stop fluctuating.

                            • Taking a toll

Highway Queries Lead to the Fast Lane
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Oklahoma highway users wishing to
call the state about electronic payment passes were mistakenly
                              directed to a sex hotline.
                              Oklahoma Transportation Authority spokeswoman Brigette
Berglan said the state's turnpike authority had made an error
in a letter sent to 41,000 people. One digit was wrong in the
telephone number for callers seeking advice on how to deal with
                              toll gate payments.
Instead, they found themselves calling a sex line where
they could speak with "exciting people," such as lonely
housewives, students and fantasy girls for $2.99 a minute.
"We're not that exciting here at the authority. We prefer
to think of ourselves as helpful," Berglan said.
Those who received the incorrect notice were sent a
                              postcard with the correct number.

                              • Brothel-ly love?

Brothel Donates Money for Tsunami Relief
BERLIN (Reuters) - A German brothel owner has been so moved
by the plight of survivors from Asia's tsunami disaster that
she is donating part of her takings from clients.
"It's not every day you can make a charitable gesture by
going to a brothel," said Mercedes Mueller, who is giving five
euros ($6.60) of the 39-euro ($51) entrance charge clients pay.
"It's so terrible what happened there and I wanted to do
something," said Mueller, who owns the Happy FKK Club in the
                                western city of Dortmund.
Mueller said clients, prostitutes and the public had all
responded with great enthusiasm to her gesture, and that about
1,300 euros ($1,700) had been raised so far.
"We have as much of a right to raise money as any other
business," she said. "We all have a heart too. I hope it will
serve as an example to others."
