Mummified Man Goes Unnoticed for Two Years
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - A reclusive Canadian man,
who neighbors thought may have gone traveling, was found
mummified in his bed, almost two years after he died,
    Manitoba's chief medical examiner says.
Winnipeg police found the body of 52-year-old Jim Sulkers
preserved in his tidy apartment after a relative phoned police
to ask them to check on him.
Sulkers, who had multiple sclerosis, preferred to be left
alone. His bill payments and pension deposits were handled
    automatically.
"It was a very well-kept second floor condominium, neat and
clean, with everything in its place, and there was a body of a
man on the bed, covered in a sheet, like he was sleeping,
except that the body was mummified," said Thambirajah
Balachandra, who investigates deaths in the province.
A newspaper dated Nov. 21, 2002, was in the apartment in an
upscale Winnipeg neighborhood. Balachandra said the man died of
    natural causes.

    • September 5, 2004 -- Here's more proof that military intelligence is an oxymoron. The Defense Department spent $70,500 making a film called "The People's Right to Know," meant to teach employees how to respond to public-information requests. But it won't make parts of the video public. Apparently the military wasn't sure if it had rights to use some historical footage....

      • September 9, 2004 -- It was a different kind of stick-up down in South Carolina, where a robber held up a bank — with a rusty pitchfork. Cops in Aiken say the man, in a mask and sunglasses, entered the Security Federal Bank, held up a 4-foot long fork like a spear, and demanded money. He escaped with a wad of cash — and then vanished like a, uh, needle in a haystack.

        • September 17, 2004 -- A black Labrador left in a truck while his owner watched Canada win the World Cup of hockey threw the vehicle into gear and drove down a hill. Cops arrived to find the truck in the middle of a road, blocking traffic, with the dog still at the wheel in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. "Subsequent investigation indicates the dog was celebrating the Canadian victory and knocked the truck into gear," an amused police spokesman said. "No word yet on how the dog is doing studying the rules for negotiating the new traffic circle."

          • September 19, 2004 -- Texas jurors let convicted killer driver Frank Dorsett off the hook with a probation sentence — but a judge fought back, ruling that as conditions of his probation, Dorsett must serve two separate 180-day jail terms. He'll also have to carry a photo of the wreck, take drugs that sicken him if he drinks liquor, never drive a car of more than 130 horsepower, and drive with a bumper sticker asking witnesses to alert authorities if he's reckless. "The terms of his probation will make up for anything the jury had taken away from us," said Guy Blasingame, whose 16-year-old daughter Rachel was killed by Dorsett.

            • September 20, 2004 --A female motorist called mechanics to check a strange sound coming from her car — but probably wished she hadn't. The noises turned out to be the sound of her buzzing vibrator. The battery-powered sex toy had apparently switched itself on in the woman's suitcase as she was driving through London. Hmm, sort of gives a new definition to autoeroticism.

              • September 21, 2004 -- A bad milkshake at a McDonald's in Florida led three men to bomb the eatery, police say. Pedro Garza and brothers Joshua and Nathaniel Hackey allegedly set off an improvised bomb made of toilet-bowl cleaner, aluminum foil and plastic in the North Lakeland fast-food joint to get revenge for what they said was a gastronomic disaster. Nobody was injured — but the suspects won't get a replacement shake.

                    • September 23, 2004 -- New York may be the "Naked City," but San Francisco can lay a stake to that claim, too — in a different sort of way. Prosecutors there are dropping lewdness charges against George Monty Davis, 58, better known as the "Naked Yoga Guy," who freaks out tourists by practicing in the buff at Fisherman's Wharf. "Being naked in San Francisco is not a crime unless the gentleman had lewd conduct or was obstructing traffic," said Debbie Mesloh, a spokeswoman for the local district attorney.

September 24, 2004 -- Researchers at the University of Florida say they've trained rats to sniff out explosives or earthquake survivors buried in rubble — just as rescue dogs do. The rodents can crawl into the tiniest spaces, and have a strong sense of smell, making them "ideal candidates for sniffing out buried survivors," the researchers report in New Scientist magazine.

                              • September 27, 2004 --A women's soccer team was thrown out of a tournament in Guatemala when organizers discovered the players were all hookers. But the Stars of the Line team is claiming discrimination. The Blue Devils' team captain, "Valeria," said, "When they found out we were prostitutes, they tossed us out like cockroaches. "Just for being prostitutes, society marginalizes us."
