October 8, 2003 -- Note to pot growers: One Glade Air Freshener is not enough to mask the scent of 170 pounds of marijuana. A group of college students found that out when cops raided the drug farm they created in their Chicago apartment, where the temperature was kept at a stifling 100 degrees. "Once you got off the elevator, you could smell it. They put an air freshener near the front door, like that would do any good," Tactical Officer Jeannette O'Brien said.

        WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Mr. Udink, You Can't Have That License Plate

        POSTED: 4:18 p.m. EDT October 8, 2003

SALT LAKE CITY -- Dennis Udink feels there's nothing dirty about his name.

He's trying to get a vanity license plate in Utah that says "UDINK." But his request has been rejected by the Division of Motor Vehicles because it's supposedly vulgar.

Udink appealed and has a hearing scheduled for later this month. Now, he's getting support from state Senate Minority Leader Mike Dmitrich.

Dmitrich says Udink is a pretty well-known family name. He added it's only offensive to people who make it offensive.

October 9, 2003 -- Turns out a dog isn't always man's best friend. Just ask Juan Evangelista Poot, who was shot in the back by his pet pooch. Poot, 22, of Yucatan, Mexico, said his dog picked up his gun and was holding it in his mouth when it went off. "Somehow the dog managed to fire the gun, but it is not like we will arrest him," a police spokesman said.

October 10, 2003 -- A German bar is offering women who want to shop without their partners the chance to park them at the country's first kindergarten for men. For $11.80, the Nox Tavern in Hamburg has boys' games and home-improvement coaching, as well as a meal and two beers for men left there Saturday afternoons by their bargain-hunting mates.

October 11, 2003 -- Here's a good reason not to get caught with your pants down. Dutch scientists have developed underpants - and bras - with built-in sensors that call an ambulance if the wearer has a heart attack. "They are so easy to use, the patients wouldn't realize they are wearing special underwear," said Karel Joosee, director of the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven.

Collecting pop-up toasters sort of makes sense - if you're used to dealing with people who've flipped their lids. Anyhow, toasters are what psychiatrist Kenneth Huggins of Columbia, S.C., collects. He has 650 of them. He also has toaster bird houses and a toaster weather vane. When teased about his hobby, the sensitive shrink's standard reply is "Golf - now that's weird."

October 12, 2003 -- Authorities in New Mexico want to exhume the mother of Billy the Kid to put to rest once and for all any controversy over when and how the Wild West outlaw died. Legend has it that Billy, whose real name was William Bonney, was slain by Sheriff Pat Garrett in 1881 after a jail escape. But others believe Bonney escaped to Texas and died nearly 70 years later. DNA testing would show whether Bonney's mom, Catherine Antrim, was related to Ollie Roberts, who died in 1950 in Texas, and claimed he was Billy the Kid....now why can't she just lie in pease

                      Read The Fine Print...........

My lovely bride pointed out that there are some real winners in the "Cautionary Notes" otherwise known as the fine print stuff that comes with any prescription medication. These literary gems outline the possible side effects of the medication. A couple of gems are: "This product may cause Diarrhea and Constipation". That's right, AND. Don't want to be around when that one breaks loose..... Also, you may find "Sweating and Chills" as well. My favorite: "If this problem persists, see your physican". Duh!! Stay Safe....

October 13, 2003 -- Exuberant guests firing their guns into the air at a Serbian wedding accidentally shot down a two-seater plane which was being flown by a pair of joy riders. The plane burst into flames and crash-landed near Kraljevo in central Serbia after being hit in the wing by a stray bullet. The men - who didn't have pilots' licenses - survived with injuries.

October 17, 2003 -- General Motors officials are hastily renaming a new car for the Canadian market after learning its original name has a jaw-dropping double meaning. GM changed the name LaCrosse after learning it's slang for masturbation in French-speaking Quebec.
