  • Chips Ahoy!

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) - A 19-year-old man took top honors at a
    contest here like no other.
Ed Sydow threw a dried buffalo dropping 108 feet, nine inches
Saturday to be named winner of the World Championship Buffalo Chip
    Toss.
Janalee Cole of Buffalo, Wyo., took the women's title throwing
    68 feet.
The event is more than 20 years old and organizers say they have
not heard of any other such contest - nor have they been challenged
for claiming the event is the world championship.
The top three winners in each age and sex division took home a
plaque featuring a gold, silver or bronze-painted buffalo chip.
The event was part of the annual Chadron Fur Trade Days
    celebration.

    • Let's not get all fired up.....

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A church's plan for an old-fashioned
book-burning has been thwarted by city and county fire codes.
Preachers and congregations throughout American history have
built bonfires and tossed in books and other materials they
believed offended God. The Rev. Scott Breedlove, pastor of The
Jesus Church, wanted to rekindle that tradition in a July 28
ceremony where books, CDs, videos and clothing would have been
      thrown into the flames.
Not so fast, city officials said.
"We don't want a situation where people are burning rubbish as
a recreational fire," said Brad Brenneman, the fire department's
      district chief.
Linn County won't go for a fire outside city limits, either.
Officials said the county's air quality division prohibits the
transporting of materials from the city to the county for burning.
Breedlove said a city fire inspector suggested shredding the
offending material, but Breedlove said that wouldn't seem biblical.
"I joked with the guy that St. Paul never had to worry about
      fire codes," Breedlove said.
The new plan calls for members of the church to throw materials
into garbage cans and then light candles to symbolically "burn"
      the material.

      • Defending her Dick...so to speak!

Vice president's wife says his profane comments to senator are out
        of character
WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Cheney's wife Lynne said Sunday
that his profane comments to a Democratic senator late last month
were both understandable and out of character.
"He's more likely to say, 'Put a sock in it,"' Cheney said on
        CNN's Late Edition.
The vice president cursed at Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy
during a confrontation on the Senate floor while members were
having their annual group picture taken.
Senate aides said later that Cheney confronted Leahy about some
of the Democrat's critical comments about Cheney and alleged
improprieties in Iraq military contracts awarded to Halliburton Co.
Cheney ran Halliburton before becoming vice president.
Cheney reportedly told Leahy "Go f--- yourself."
"It's very unusual," Cheney said of her husband's cursing.
"But he was sorely tried, if I may say so, by someone attacking
his integrity and then pretending to be his best friend. I think
        that's what set it off."
She said "the way Dick did it, it was a private comment."
"You wouldn't know it from the amount of publicity that it's
garnered, but John Kerry used the same word in an on-the-record
interview about the president of the United States," she said.
When interviewed about the Iraq war, Kerry told Rolling Stone
magazine earlier this year he "didn't expect Bush to f--- it up
        this much."
Lynne Cheney said her husband's comments were not to a reporter,
but were "in a private setting."
"I can understand, when people are pushed to extremes that in a
private setting they might say something unusual," she said.

        • Uh ... duhh!

          Outhouse Explodes in West Virginia
(Blacksville, West Virginia-AP) July 14, 2004 — Warning: Smoking in the outhouse can be dangerous.

A man is recovering from burns after lighting a cigarette in a portable outhouse -- causing the outhouse to explode.

It happened yesterday in Blacksville, West Virginia.

A spokeswoman for Monongalia (mahn-un-GAYL'-yuh) Emergency Medical Services said the explosion was caused by a build-up of methane gases inside the outhouse. She said the methane didn't "take too kindly" to the lit cigarette.

The man's name and condition aren't being released, but emergency officials say he wasn't severely hurt and drove himself to a clinic.

          • July 15, 2004 -- Daryl Miller didn't make it through airport security — because he couldn't keep his pants on. A security screener in Minneapolis was waving a metal-detecting wand around Miller when Miller allegedly dropped his pants to his ankles, revealing he had no underwear, and taunted, "There, how do you like your job?" He was charged with indecent exposure and released on $300 bail. "We needed to take some action on that, otherwise everybody would be dropping their pants," Lt. Matt Christenson said.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Medical authorities are investigating
a Romanian doctor after he allegedly cut off a patient's penis
accidentally during testicle surgery, officials said Friday.
Mircea Cinteza, chairman of Romania's Doctors College, said
colleagues would meet Friday to decide whether the unidentified
              urologist is guilty of malpractice.
The 34-year-old patient's penis was severed during an operation
at a Bucharest hospital on Tuesday.
Dr. Ioan Lascar, a plastic surgeon who performed an operation on
the man Thursday to help him urinate, said the patient was in
              stable condition.
Lascar said the man would undergo reconstruction surgery in the
coming months but the chances of success are unknown.
The urologist was temporarily suspended pending the
investigation. If found guilty of malpractice, he could lose his
              license to practice medicine.

              • Needles and Pins

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German acupuncture patient was left
pierced with needles in a clinic after a therapist forgot about
her, locked up his practice and went home, police in Hanover
                said on Thursday.
The 41-year-old woman from the north German town had booked
an afternoon session of the ancient Chinese therapy which
involves inserting needles into the skin and is believed to
                prevent disease and relieve pain.
The doctor left her in the treatment room for what she
assumed would be a short while, especially since she still had
                needles embedded in her body.
After 90 minutes the woman began to shout for attention.
Getting no response, she realized she was alone and trapped in
the building. She alerted police by phone and was later set
                free when the doctor returned.

                • I'm dead?

Man Learns He's Dead, Thanks to Blind Ex-Wife
MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian taxi driver got a rude shock
when he discovered his blind ex-wife, who thought he had died
in an explosion, had him buried in a Moscow cemetery, a
                  newspaper reported on Thursday.
Oleg Lunkov learned of his apparent death when he applied
for a passport and was told he died in a bomb blast on Moscow's
metro on February 6. His ex-wife thought he was on the train,
but being blind, she got her mother to identify the remains.
"I thought, 'I hope they didn't bury me on my birthday',"
Lunkov told the Moscow Times after visiting his grave in
southeastern Moscow. "But it turns out they did."
The grave has been exhumed by police investigating his wife
                  for possible fraud.
Lunkov's name still appears on prosecutors' official list
of the 38 people who died in the explosion.

                    Museum Considers Excrement Power
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Science Museum says it is
considering a radical way of paying its hefty energy bills --
                    using visitors' excrement.
The central London museum said it was considering taking
the waste from its 14 toilet blocks and converting it into
                    electricity.
"With free admission it would be a great way for visitors
to give something back to the museum and help keep the
overheads down," said the museum's head Jon Tucker. "We have
almost 3 million visitors each year and have huge electricity
                    bills."
The museum said the plan would be to siphon off waste from
the toilets, store it and then either burn it as fuel in a
mini-power station or turn it into electricity using a
                    microbial fuel cell.
The power produced from the excrement of 100,000 visitors
could produce enough to power 500 light bulbs, while also
breaking down harmful organic matter, it said.

Edwards Chooses Fast-Food Joint as Romantic Date
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - He's worth millions and could afford
the fanciest restaurant in town, but Democratic vice
presidential nominee Sen. John Edwards and his wife celebrate
each wedding anniversary at a fast-food joint.
The Edwards' have made a romantic ritual out of toasting
their nuptials at food chain Wendy's, a tradition that will
continue on their 27th anniversary this year.
"Wendy's, we go to Wendy's for our anniversary," the North
Carolina senator told NBC's "Today" show on Thursday.
Elizabeth Edwards said on their first anniversary they were
moving house, looking "grungy and awful" and so instead of
going somewhere fancy they chose Wendy's.
"The next year, for some reason we found ourselves at
                      Wendy's again," said Mrs. Edwards.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Blondes perform intelligence tests more
slowly after reading jokes playing on their supposed stupidity,
said psychologists in a newly published German study.
Some 80 women of various hair colors were tested on their
mental capacity to work quickly and precisely in a series of
psychometric tests. Before sitting the tests, half the
participants had to read "dumb blonde" jokes, such as:
"Why do blondes open yogurt pots while still at the
supermarket? -- Because it says 'Open Here' on the lid."
"No blonde woman believes she is stupid," said Jens

The 25 year-old had just finished riding the waves and was
still attached to his board by the security strap when a gust
of wind caught his sail and blew him into the tree.
When a bystander helped the man down from the tree a second
gust carried the windsurfer straight into the nearby parked
                            car.
Police in the eastern German town of Schwerin said the man
was now recovering from slight injuries.

                            • Ain't no Judge Judy

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Sandu Gurguiatu first sued for money.
                              Then for love.
The love-struck Romanian first took his company to court four
years ago for what he said was unfair dismissal. But after setting
eyes on Judge Elena Lala, he sued his employers and others dozens
of times - only to be able to see her.
"I fell madly in love with her and when I found out she was
married, I didn't know how I would manage to see her," he told the
daily Libertatea on Thursday. "The only way was to see her in the
courtroom, so I looked in the law book and came up with all kinds
                              of excuses."
Sometimes he would approach her in the halls of the courtroom in
Focsani, a city some 200 kilometers (125 miles) northeast of
Bucharest, but was too timid to talk to her beyond legal matters,
                              the paper reported.
Eventually, the infatuation subsided and Gurguiatu he decided to
                              go public with his story.
The Focsani court declined to comment on the report in the
newspaper. Lala, the object of Gurguiatu's affection told the paper
                              she was "stunned."
"I remember judging his cases, but for me all cases are
equal," she was quoted as saying.
Gurguiatu lost his first suit. But he won some subsequent ones
against other companies - including the right to have two towels
and enough soap to wash up at work.

                              • July 16, 2004 -- A man sitting on a toilet lit a cigarette — and blew it up. The explosion, in a porta-potty in Blacksville, W.Va., resulted from a buildup of methane gas, officials said. Amazingly, the unidentified man wasn't badly hurt — although we're sure his ego was badly scorched.
