  • Chubby, Barefoot Man Outruns Police
SYDNEY (Reuters) - A chubby, barefoot Australian man outran
police Wednesday when he bolted through security gates left
open at the back of a court he was being led into, officials
    said.
Security footage showed the overweight man dashing down a
back lane in central Sydney pursued by at least four police and
prison guards, two of whom tripped while giving chase.
"There was about seven or eight fellows but they couldn't
stop him. He was a big fellow, pretty strong, but he could
run," witness Chris Swift told reporters.
Red-faced police and prison officials were left to blame
each other for the security slip-up. "My information is...that
he was definitely in police custody," Australian Corrective
    Services official Ron Woodham said.
Asked how an overweight, barefoot man had outrun police,
inspector Peter Thorne said: "I don't know, I wasn't here."

    • Briton drags TV by ear to protest Italy media power
MILAN, April 14 (Reuters) - British performance artist Mark
McGowan dragged a television roped to his ear through Milan on
Wednesday to protest against what he called excessive political
control over the media in Italy and other countries.
His head bandaged to hold the rope, he said he was heading
for the headquarters of Fininvest, the holding company of Prime
      Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
"I'm going to bring it down to Silvio," said McGowan, who
scooted along on his backside through a central square,
attracting puzzled looks from passers-by. He said he had covered
one km (a half mile) and had another three to go.
Berlusconi, Italy's wealthiest man, owns Mediaset, the
largest commercial broadcaster, through Fininvest. As prime
minister, he also influences programming at state broadcaster
      RAI.
McGowan's other exploits have included pushing a nut with
his nose through London to the prime minister's residence at 10
Downing Street to protest against high education costs.

      • 'Blonde Angel' robs frisky German hospital patient
BERLIN, April 14 (Reuters) - A German laid up in hospital
with multiple fractures telephoned out for a prostitute to help
him end weeks of sexual frustration.
But it ended up costing more than he bargained for, police
said on Wednesday; unable to walk, he gave the woman his bank
card to collect her fee and she helped herself to his cash.
"I'm told it's a common problem in hospitals. People get
frisky," said Wolfgang Jungnitsch, a police inspector from
        Nordhessen district in central Germany.
The 47-year-old car crash victim had asked the woman,
described in her newspaper ad as "Blonde Angel, aged 18," to
take 150 euros ($185) from his bank account.
Only later did he discover she had taken 2,000 euros -- all
the more expensive since he had taken cold feet for fear of
getting caught and had sent the woman away without having sex.

            Wisconsin Cop Takes Doughnut-Eating Prize

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (AP) -- A patrolman from Wisconsin left his opponents in a cloud of powdered sugar dust by downing 9 1/2 doughnuts in three minutes to win a doughnut-eating contest for police officers in suburban Chicago.

Terry O'Brien of the Town of Geneva Police Department in Lake Geneva, Wis., said he was destined to win Wednesday's contest because law enforcement runs in his family.

"Actually, it was my father, who's deceased," O'Brien said. "He was a Chicago cop, a lifer. Today is his birthday."

For the second year in a row, the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association held the contest at its annual conference. The Dunkin' Donuts World Cop Donut Eating Championship attracted 40 contestants from the U.S. and Canada.

Master of Ceremonies Ed Nowicki said he was amazed by what it took to win this year.

"I thought they'd do seven (doughnuts), maybe they'd do eight," Nowicki said. "I couldn't believe 10!"

Money raised through the entry fee and T-shirt sales was donated to the Law Enforcement Memorial Fund and the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association scholarship fund.

            • Where will you be at 104 years old?

              Apr 14, 4:44 PM EDT

World's Oldest Worker Quits at 104

GRANTHAM, Pa. (AP) -- A man billed as the world's oldest worker is calling it quits.

Ray Crist, a retired scientist who started teaching at Messiah College near Harrisburg in 1970, put down his pointer Tuesday at age 104.

Crist, though, has no plans to rest on his laurels.

Instead, he'll keep up with his research and academic papers, the latest of which sets out to explain how plants absorb toxic metals and thereby clean the soil.

"When you have a mission, you go after it," said Crist, who worked on the Manhattan Project. "And I am still going after it."

Two years ago, at age 102, Crist was named America's oldest worker by a nonprofit training group called Experience Works.

He started at Messiah at age 70, after a career in science and a decade teaching at Dickinson University. In his 34 years at Messiah, he took only a token salary of $1 a year.

"...(L)ast year when I had classes in his building, I would walk by and see him in his office," said sophomore Kinsey Rice. "He would be in there, hunched over at the desk, working. It was kind of like motivation."

Crist was born in central Pennsylvania, just a few miles from the land where Messiah would be built. His grandfather was a Union soldier in the Civil War, and his father a farmer and auctioneer.

Crist got used to hard work early, feeding hogs every morning as a boy.

In 1926, he earned a doctorate in chemistry from Columbia University. In 1945, he was a director with the Manhattan Project, the secret U.S. effort to develop an atomic bomb. He later worked at Union Carbide Corp.

Crist, who lives in Carlisle, lost his wife in 1961. His son, Henry Crist, is a pathologist at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A Belgian court sentenced a farmer to
a year in prison for stealing and killing 12 chickens, several
chicks and a cat belonging to his elderly neighbor, local news
                              agency Belga says.
The 30-year-old farmer, who runs a chicken farm in the
western Belgian town of Detergem, asked a hunter to kill the
creatures because he was fed up with his neighbor's free-range
chickens running around on his property.
The Kortrijk court on Monday also convicted three

                              • Prayer Leader Defends Beating of Adulterous Wives
PARIS (Reuters) - An Algerian-born Muslim prayer leader in
France faces legal action after he defended the stoning and
beating of adulterous wives in a magazine interview, French
Justice Minister Dominique Perben said Tuesday.
Abdelkader Bouziane, 52, imam of a mosque in the Lyon
suburb of Venissieux in eastern France, told the monthly Lyon
Mag that the Koran allowed husbands to beat unfaithful spouses
as long as they did not strike them on the face.
Expressing disgust at "this archaic approach toward women,"
Venissieux mayor Andre Gerin urged France's justice and
interior ministers Sunday to launch a probe into Bouziane's
preaching, which he said "pollutes our neighborhoods and our
                                kids' heads."
"This man will have to explain his statements to a court,"
Perben told France 2 television. France's five million Muslims,
the largest Islamic minority in Europe, are mostly of North
                                African origin.
"Domestic violence is an abomination," he said. "As soon as
this article was published, I asked the criminal affairs office
of the Justice Ministry to see how we can take legal action."
