Crafty German suspect fakes heart attack
BERLIN - A crafty German suspected thief escaped police
after his arrest by faking a heart attack and fleeing when his
handcuffs were removed for treatment, authorities in the
    western city of Duesseldorf said.
"He started complaining of chest pains in custody and said
he was having a heart attack," a police spokeswoman said. "It
seems he gave quite a convincing performance, and you can't be
    too careful in these situations."
The 40-year-old's condition improved dramatically as soon
as his hands were freed for a scan in hospital and he ran half
naked to the nearest emergency exit.
A police search found no trace of the man.

    • January 23, 2004 -- Better late than never — that's Merle Beane's motto. He has finally graduated from Portland HS in Maine — 65 years after he should have. In 1939, Beane was months from a sheepskin when he was sick for two days with the flu. On his return, a woman — he's not sure who — told him, "people like you shouldn't be in school," and he quit. He stayed away until he hit his 80s, when he finally decided it was time to get his diploma.

      • Conviction ruined by overly-handsome undercover cop
        (South Florida Sun-Sentinel)Jan.22, 2004
"Fort Lauderdale Detective Mike Nahum's handsome appearance lost him a criminal case, but there is a consolation prize. He may be the only guy in the world with a court order declaring he is a 'very attractive man.' Nahum is so cute that a Broward Circuit Court judge threw out a criminal charge against a West Palm Beach man charged with selling drugs to Nahum during an undercover sting at a gay nightclub in Fort Lauderdale. Judge Susan Lebow ruled the defendant, Julio Blanco, was lured by the police officer into committing a crime in hopes he would be rewarded with sex... Diligent efforts to get a photograph of Nahum so that readers could judge for themselves proved fruitless. Fort Lauderdale Detective Andy Pallen said Nahum could not be photographed because he is still working undercover."

        • January 24, 2004 -- LONDON - Britain's biggest-selling hiking magazine apologized Wednesday after its latest issue contained a route that would lead climbers off the edge of a cliff on Britain's tallest peak. The February edition of Trail magazine gives advice on making a safe descent for hikers caught in bad weather on Ben Nevis in Scotland. But the magazine's directions would instead lead readers off the north face of the 4,406-foot mountain, which is notorious for its changeable weather and has claimed the lives of several climbers.Guy Procter, the editor of Trail, acknowledged the magazine had inadvertently deleted the first of two crucial bearings needed to get off the summit. He said that happened during the editing process.

          • January 25, 2004 -- You're never too old to rob a bank. Just ask 92-year-old J.L. Hunter Rountree of Texas, who's been sentenced to 12 1/2 years behind bars for robbing an Abilene bank. It was his third such robbery in less than five years. "Hurry up or you will get hurt," the geezer told the Abilene bank teller after slipping a note that said "Robery" in red marker. Rountree, the oldest known bank robber in the country, was nabbed by cops 30 minutes later.

                      • January 28, 2004 --An Alabama mom opened a bag of potatoes she bought at Wal-Mart and a baby copperhead snake sprung out when she turned her back. Toni Barnard of Semmes looked up moments later to see her 11-month-old son Trevor grab the reptile and put it in his mouth. She quickly yanked the snake away and a neighbor cut its head off. Wal-Mart has pulled the remaining bags of potatoes as a precaution.

                        • Maybe Baird should consider this?

Denmark calls for probe of stand-in prisoners
                          COPENHAGEN, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Denmark's judicial
establishment demanded on Wednesday an investigation into the
practice of criminals paying stand-ins to serve their prison
                          sentences.
Danish prison authorities lack the tools to check prisoners'
identities thoroughly, giving rise to the scam.
"We know of six cases of stand-in inmates since 1996 but we
can of course not guarantee there haven't been other cases that
we don't know of," Annette Esdorf, deputy head of the Department
of Prison and Probation, told Reuters on Wednesday.
Prison officials cannot demand photo identification and are
not equipped to take fingerprints, so a substitute only has to
present the original written conviction and a doctor's
certificate as proof of his identity, officials said.
Danish Justice Minister Lene Espersen demanded an
investigation and said the matter was "very serious."
"It is of course completely unacceptable if you can cheat
your way out of a prison sentence," she said in a statement.
Esdorf said all Danish jails had been asked to inform her if
they had problems identifying prisoners, while her office was
                          considering investing in fingerprinting equipment.
Hiring a prison stand-in and serving time for another person
are punishable by fines or jail terms of up to one year.

Giant snowball stops Dutch train in its tracks
AMSTERDAM, Jan 28 (Reuters) - A giant snowball stopped Dutch
trains in their tracks on Wednesday on a key route, and young
pranksters thrilled by a rare snowfall were the prime suspects.
"The engine driver felt a smack and stopped the train. He
walked back and reported a large snowball had rolled down the
slope onto the rails," a spokesman for rail network operator
                            ProRail said.
"We suspect it was pushed down the slope by some youths."

Berlin was temporarily suspended. Weather experts say the first
heavy snowfall for years could cause major traffic disruption.

went astray and hit the wall of his house, a court in the
northern town of Lueneburg said Wednesday.
"Two 16-year-olds were having a snowball fight, and the
judge's house got hit. Then the light went on, the door opened,

                              • She looked older....?

Uganda police break up honeymoon, arrest groom
KAMPALA, Uganda (Reuters) - A Ugandan groom found himself
in jail and facing a possible death sentence after police
stormed his honeymoon to investigate if his bride was underage,
                                police said Wednesday.
Police raided Buttanswa village, 60 miles north of the
capital Kampala, early Tuesday and arrested Alamanzan Nkugwa on
suspicion that he had married a 14-year-old girl. The legal age
for women to marry in Uganda is 18.
"We have arrested the man and the girl has been brought to
Kampala for medical examination to see whether they had sex and
ascertain her age," police spokesman John Kimera said.
He said Nkugwa, who married the girl in a public ceremony
attended by local leaders Sunday, was expected to be charged
with defilement. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
The state-owned New Vision said Nkugwa paid a dowry of
10,000 shillings ($5) for the girl, who dropped out of primary
school last year. The newspaper said the girl's parents decided
to marry her off, saying she was a slow learner.
