  • October 3, 2006 -- Forget air bags - invest in breast implants. A 24-year-old woman in the Bulgarian town of Ruse reportedly survived a car crash thanks to her silicone breasts. The woman blew a red light, crashing into another car. "The two cars were crumpled past recognition in the crash but the woman's silicone breasts acted as airbags and saved her life," witnesses told a local newspaper. Survival, like beauty, comes at a price, however: The implants burst in the crash.

      Police hunt breast enlargement cheats
BERLIN (Reuters) - A German plastic surgeon who was cheated
out of payment by several women has given pictures of their
enlarged breasts to police, in the hope the photos will help
      trace them.
"The women registered under fake names," Michael Koenig, a
surgeon in Cologne, told Bild newspaper. "After the operations,
which lasted about an hour, they just ran away."
"Tanja" went out for "fresh air" after 8,000-euro ($10,000)
surgery to enlarge her breasts. "She never came back and never
paid," Koenig said. He now plans to demand payment in advance.
Bild published a five-column picture of Tanja's naked
breasts. "It's probably the most unusual wanted poster police
      ever had," the newspaper wrote.

      • Body found in bed 5 years after death
VIENNA (Reuters) - Austrian authorities have discovered the
body of a man who apparently died at home in bed five years
ago, a Vienna newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The corpse of Franz Riedl, thought to have been in his late
80s when he died, went undetected for so long because his rent
had been paid by automatic order from the bank account into
which he received his pension, the daily Kurier said.
Neighbors said there was no strange smell coming from
Riedl's apartment and authorities who found the body after a
court order was given to enter said his body appeared to have
        "mummified" and was well preserved.
"He had been frail and a woman had helped him," the husband
of the apartment block's caretaker told Kurier, adding that
mail had always piled up outside the pensioner's flat. "We
thought he had moved in with her or gone to an old people's
        home."
Police said they were not certain as to exactly when the
man had died, but that they had found only schilling notes in
the apartment -- the currency used by Austria before the
introduction of the euro on January 1, 2002.

        • Drink called "Cocaine" infuriates New York mayor
          By Amanda Cooper
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A canned energy drink called
"Cocaine" being sold in New York grocery stores has infuriated
the city's mayor who says its brand name celebrates the use of
          a dangerous drug.
"I think that the bottlers ought to have their heads
examined given that we have drug problems (particularly) among
kids, to try to glorify something that is so destructive
is an outrage," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told a news
          conference Tuesday.
The high-caffeine drink, created by Las Vegas-based Redux
Beverages, contains no cocaine, but markets itself as "the
legal alternative" to the real thing.
It contains a mixture of legal stimulants like caffeine,
guarana -- a South American seed that is a natural source of
caffeine -- and taurine, an acidic chemical that occurs in the
          tissues of animals.
The drink, which carries a mock health warning saying it
can result in "excess excitement, stamina, fun and possible
feeling of euphoria," has appeared on the shelves of at least
five New York stores and the company uses a Web site to market
          cocktails containing the beverage.

          • And now we paws for this message...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Stage mothers for a Rottweiler and other dogs
have sued a company called Hollywood Paws for failing to turn their
            pooches into stars.
More than a dozen pet owners contend the company collected tens
of thousands of dollars but never delivered on promises to get film
and television auditions for their pets.
"I lost a lot of money," said Rachel Armstrong, owner of
            Goliath the Rottweiler.
Armstrong said she believed her dog had the "cool" factor that
would get him into music videos and paid nearly $2,000 (euro1,570)
to Hollywood Paws LLC for training.
All she got was a rejection from "The Tyra Banks Show."
Attorney Cynthia Mulvihill filed the suit in Superior Court last
            month.
"Who wouldn't want to be told, 'Hey your member of the family
is beautiful and should be in the movies'?" she asked.
Hollywood Paws offers training in such media skills as getting a
pooch or cat to crawl, freeze or scratch on command.
On its Web site, the company warns: "Completing these courses
won't guarantee that your house pet will become a screen pet."
The business also has a talent agency and bills itself as "a
way to effectively link animal actors and studio trainers with
professionals in the entertainment industry looking for new
            talent."
Hollywood Paws owner Larry Lionetti contends he never promised
acting jobs, although he said several animals had won spots in
            commercials.
"Everybody knows down in your town that there are actors and
actresses waiting on tables until a part comes along," he said.
"Who in L.A. doesn't know this?"

            • Spain official rapped for parliament video stunt
MADRID, Oct 2 (Reuters) - A Spanish official has been
disciplined for allowing four pranksters to sneak into
parliament and video themselves pretending to steal the prime
              minister's chair.
Parliament has also contacted state prosecutors about a
spoof video posted on the Internet which showed four hooded
figures stealing the chair Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero
sits on during debates, it said in a news release on Monday.
"The prime minister's chair is still there," the parliament
said, adding that it had disciplined one of its own officials
for letting in the pranksters, who had been identified..
A group calling itself Four Cats posted the video on the

              • Medical resident charged with stealing hand from cadaver
LOS ANGELES (AP) - An emergency medicine resident at the
embattled Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center has been
charged with stealing a hand from a cadaver in New Jersey and
giving it to an exotic dancer.
Ahmed Rashed, 26, faces up to 10 years in prison for allegedly
nabbing the left hand of a cadaver around June 2002 while he was a
medical student at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New
                Jersey.
He turned himself in to New Jersey authorities Sept. 18, after
being charged with second-degree theft, the Los Angeles Times
reported. He is free on $1,000 (euro790) bail.
Los Angeles County health officials said they could not comment
on personnel matters, but confirmed Rashed is an employee at the
                medical center.
King-Drew would have had no way of knowing about the accusations
against Rashed when he was hired last year. The hospital, however,
has allowed the second-year resident to continue treating patients
since the charges were filed last month.
Judson Hamlin, an assistant Middlesex County prosecutor, said
police discovered the hand in a glass jar at the home of the exotic
dancer during a separate investigation. Rashed and the dancer,
Linda Kay, were reportedly acquaintances, the prosecutor said.

                • It's official: B.C. smokes the most pot
Marijuana use outstrips tobacco among province's youth, study finds

Richard Watts, Times Colonist Published: Thursday, October 05, 2006

More British Columbians smoke marijuana than people anywhere else in Canada, according to a UVic study released yesterday.

Moreover, its daily use among young people here outstrips tobacco, a majority of us want the drug decriminalized, and we report little difficulty in getting our hands on it.

"There is more occasional and low-risk cannabis use, more tolerant attitudes, and greater availability in B.C. than in the rest of Canada," says the study from the Centre for Addictions Research of B.C., based at the University of Victoria.

"In B.C., cannabis, like alcohol, is now regarded as a 'normal' recreational drug."

It's also big business. The study cites estimates that the cannabis industry in B.C. accounts for one to 2.8 per cent of the provincial gross domestic product, which makes cannabis sales worth possibly as much as $3.64 billion per year.

Meanwhile, the study, which calls cannabis "Canada's favourite illicit recreational drug," also exploded the myth of the super-potent "B.C. Bud."

According to RCMP data from 2004, the THC content of marijuana seized in B.C. is not significantly different from that of cannabis seized in other provinces. THC is the active ingredient in cannabis.

Many of the findings in the UVic study are based on a 2004 Canadian Addiction Survey, which found that 53 per cent of British Columbians reported having used cannabis, compared with 44 per cent of Canadians. Sixty-five per cent of British Columbians also report that it is easy to find, versus only 44 per cent in Canada as a whole.

That last finding could stem from the fact that we also seem to grow it more.

There were 25,014 charges for cannabis cultivation in B.C. between 1997 and 2004.

That works out to 79 per 100,000 people, almost three times the national average of 27 per 100,000.

One of the few categories where Canada scored higher than B.C. was in the proportion of people who want marijuana to remain illegal: 49 per cent in Canada versus only 42 per cent in B.C.

Dr. Benedikt Fischer, one of the authors of the study, said it offers more proof the existing, law-enforcement approach to cannabis isn't working.

"It's very categorical, black and white," Fischer said. "It says 'no use is good, any use at all is bad.' "

Meanwhile, he said cannabis use has nearly doubled in the past 10 years.

It would make far more sense to start reflecting public attitudes and approach cannabis use as a public-health issue rather than a strict law-enforcement issue, he said.

Authorities should concentrate on the harmful behaviours associated with marijuana use, like driving while under its influence, rather than trying to stamp it out, he said.

Such an approach would also be in line with public attitudes since most people want to see it remain under some legal control, even as they call for its decriminalization.

"But there really needs to be a bit of a paradigm shift," Fischer said.

                          • October 7, 2006 -- Sometimes getting in for free isn't a plus.
Just ask the kids trying to get in to Six Flags Kentucky who've been offered free admission if they eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach. The Halloween promotion has sparked protest complaining of both child and animal cruelty. But park officials say they've received only a "minimal" number of complaints.

                              • Morticians brave fire to save bodies (Too bad no one could save the dead Yankees)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Saying they wanted to spare families even
more pain, two Indianapolis morticians went back inside their
burning funeral home to try to save bodies.
The pair rolled out caskets containing bodies as firefighters
aimed their hoses at flames at the rear of the funeral home. They
managed to retrieve three bodies before the flames became too
intense for them to go inside. After the fired died down they
returned for the seven remaining bodies. None was damaged.
