          Shocking!

I've heard of this happening before, in fact I probably heard about it on FH, within the last year or two at the most. I don't think the other case was Canadian though. For some reason I'm thinking NE of the US, and involved the rapist breaking into the woman's home.

          • December 5, 2005 -- The big boom anticipated by thousands of spectators gathered in Sioux Falls, S.D., turned out to be a big bust when the dynamite exploded as planned but failed to blow the Zip Feed Mill to smithereens. When the smoke cleared, the 200-foot-tall structure was still standing. "It took the first floor out, and [the mill] is leaning at about a 30-degree angle," said the city's risk emergency manager, Regan Smith, adding that he plans to finish the job with some good old-fashioned wrecking balls.

Thats pretty funny, but maybe not quite so unusual. I can't remember exactly when it was done, but in Victoria we have the "World Famous" Butchart Gardens, which before the gardens were created around 1910, was a rock quarry. There was a 100 foot chimney that was part of the processing plant. In the late 90's (I think it was) they decided to blow it down. According to the Times Columnist it took more than 5 separate attempts to make it fall, and in the end they used a crane to know down the remainder of it.

                • December 7, 2005 --Some people play Christmas carols to get into the holiday spirit — authorities in Holland are playing them to get rid of unruly teens. Officials in Rotterdam say that since they've begun blasting carols from big loudspeakers where youth gangs loiter, the kids have vanished. Silent night, as they say.

Pedestrians watched in horror as five deer made their way onto the top of a five-story parking garage in Ranson, W.Va., then committed mass suicide by leaping to their deaths. "They took the plunge. It was absolutely weird," said Police Cpl. Steve Cox. He said that the carcasses were given to passers-by for butchering.

                        • Enjoy the trip, Ray. Actually, it's pretty common for law enforcement to allow passing motorists to take road killed deer and butcher them if they want to. It saves the state the cost of removing and disposing of the deer.

A friend of mine picked up a deer from an officer on the way to work one morning. In the best tradition of a Monty Python skit, half way to work he (and the car pool riding with him) discovered that the deer "wasn't dead yet" and was kicking the heck out of the trunk. Too bad I wasn't around to hear him explain how dents got put in the trunk lid of a state car.....

One in five adults cringes at the thought of their spouse's mom spending the festive season with them, with folks fearing they'll stay too long, criticize Christmas dinner, say the house is dirty, smoke and turn up late.
