  • Be careful out there!

Tonight on my way home from a drill I had to swerve to avoid a deer, then I come home and read this---thought I'd post it to remind cars aint the only thing out there you got to worry about!

Mass. man killed in moose collision on I-95 in Maine

TOWNSHIP 2, RANGE 9, Maine (AP) -- Maine officials warned motorists to use extra caution following the first moose fatality of the season.

Terrance Antworth, 38, of Quincy, Mass., was killed Friday night when his car hit a moose on Interstate 95 north of Lincoln. The moose crashed through the windshield, killing Antworth, who was alone in his Volkswagen Jetta, troopers said.

This is the time of the year when moose are most active.

In late spring, the large animals are drawn to roads by the salt left from winter salt trucks, said Chuck Hulsey, state wildlife biologist.

Moose accounted for 3,600 crashes in Maine from 1997 to 2001. These included 12 fatalities and caused $81 million in damage, officials said.

We used to have this problem...had two or three deer related MVA's every year and while reponding had to keep a careful eye out for critters (deer included)....Had a friend hit a cow at 70MPH...he got to fly on the copter and spent two weeks and three surgeries in the hospital.

          Been "deer" done that..

I hit a deer with an ambulance about 5 years ago transporting a patient to the hospital. We couldnt find the victim because Bambi crawled into some tall grass...The neighbors found it though... The hard way (by smell).. It did about 4k worth of damage to the rig. This occured in a metropolitan area of 9 million. If you do happen to run across a deer and it is inevitable you are going to hit it, DO NOT BRAKE. The deer will roll right up your hood, putting you at even greater risk for injury ..Or worse.
