Mass. man killed in moose collision on I-95 in Maine
TOWNSHIP 2, RANGE 9, Maine (AP) -- Maine officials warned motorists to use extra caution following the first moose fatality of the season.
Terrance Antworth, 38, of Quincy, Mass., was killed Friday night when his car hit a moose on Interstate 95 north of Lincoln. The moose crashed through the windshield, killing Antworth, who was alone in his Volkswagen Jetta, troopers said.
This is the time of the year when moose are most active.
In late spring, the large animals are drawn to roads by the salt left from winter salt trucks, said Chuck Hulsey, state wildlife biologist.
Moose accounted for 3,600 crashes in Maine from 1997 to 2001. These included 12 fatalities and caused $81 million in damage, officials said.
