  • 58 NYC firefighters awarded medals

(New York-AP) -- Fifty-eight New York City firefighters were
awarded with medals for bravery today in the first ceremony of its
kind since the September 11th terrorist attack.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta
handed the medals out to the firefighters, officers and fire
marshals for acts of bravery and life saving work at fires,
structural collapses, arson investigations and water rescues during
    2002.
Also, special symbolic medals were given to honor all those who
responded to the World Trade Center collapse. The medals were given
to three firefighter and a member of EMS, representing the more
than 14 thousand 500 members of the department who took part in the
    response.
