Sir Edmund Hillary... A great Kiwi.
On this day (it's 29 May here folks) 50 years ago Sir Edmund Hillary and sherpa Tenzing Norgay set foot on the summit of Mount Everest.
Sir Ed was quoted by Tenzing as passing the immortal words "Well, we knocked the bastard off." While not as inspiring as Niel Armstrongs words when he stepped onto the moon, they did describe adequately the sense of occasion he felt, in a typical Kiwi fashion.
Sir Ed has gone on to pay his respect to the people of Nepal by raising funds for schools and hospitals / medical clinics throughout the country, and has been made an honorary citizen of Nepal for his efforts.
