  • Happy Memorial day.

This Memorial day while you are BBQ'ing, enjoying a nice cold Guiness let us remember that this freedom of ours is not free, let us remember the brave men and women that have made sure that we may lay down at night and sleep in peace.Let us also not forget the people who went to work on a tuesday morning and never came home. This is dedicated to the men and women past ,present who have served and died for this great country of ours.

    A Soldier died today-
He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one.

And tho' sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today.

He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
A guy who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life?

A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal and perhaps, a pension small.

It's so easy to forget them for it was so long ago,
That the old Bills of our Country went to battle, but we know
It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,
Would you want a politician with his ever-shifting stand?
Or would you prefer a soldier, who has sworn to defend
His home, his kin and Country and would fight until the end?

He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,
Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.

Well put. Yes, I am from the Great White North but I do know what Memorial Day is. Members of my family have served. I find it interesting you said "Happy Memorial Day" you are certainly not the first to say this. I also find it interesting how businesses advertise "BIG BIG MEMORIAL DAY SALE!!! SAVE SAVE SAVE!!!" with a big happy cheery voice. So they are saying this a holiday we should celebrate? I personally think of it as a more somber day and will spend it reflecting on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. ALL GIVE SOME SOME GAVE ALL!

Ya know, dfd...I heard someone describe Lebron James as a "hero" yesterday (He is a 18 yoa HS dropout who can play bball, will be #1 drafft pick and signed a $90 mil endorsement contract with Nike). It made me cringe. Thanks for the reminder about our true heroes.

Thats a great poem. It is important that we all take some time to think of those that gave all to give us the freedoms that we have today. Thank you for posting the poem dfdex1. Just a small side note:
Isn't it ironic how some Americans use their freedoms to not participate and not remember those that fought and died to give us those freedoms that we have today? We should all try to march or remember or take part in other Memorial Day Celebrations in our towns and cities tomorrow. It would be a meaningful way to show that we care and that we remember and are grateful to those that did so much for what we have today. God Bless all of the soldiers that lost their lives fighting for this country and also all of the Veterans that made it back home.

Memorial Day shouldn't be about going to the store and getting half off on lawn furniture or something...To me it should be a day to stop our normal routine and remember those before us... because for most we were the last thing on their mine before their final breath.

Remember those who died on the front lines....

when our nation was under attack. Please honor the memory of the 343 firefighters, 37 police officers of the PAPD and the 23 police officers of the NYPD, and all other uniformed rescue workers killed on 9-11, during rescue operations at the World Trade Center.

                  Stairway to Heaven
                  By Sue Ikerd
They were on their way to Heaven as they hurried up the stairs,
Not only were they heroes, they were angels unaware.
Just going about their duties, as they had many times before
Little did they realize they were soldiers in a war.

As the victims fled the buildings on that tragic fateful day
These brave men hurried past them, with no thought to harm’s way
We can hear the bagpipes clearly as they play Amazing Grace

In salute to fallen comrades, who are in a better place
We can see their fearless faces as up those stairs they trod
Right into the gates of Heaven and before the throne of God

Thanks for the reminder, DFD. I was honored to be able to play Taps this morning and travel with the local American Legion post to the town's cemetaries this morning as they paid tribute to their fallen comrades. Though it's only a series of 24 notes, Taps always has a chilling effect when it's played at the grave of a veteran.
