FYI,"pitch" defines how far a screw should go into another medium,like wood,water and in this case,snow.
"Slippage" is the difference between the theoretical distance and the actual distance.
Using boat propellors for an example,if you have a prop that measures 20" x 20",you have a screw 20" in diameter and 20" of pitch.It should in theory move forward 20 inches for every complete revolution.
If it only moves 17" per revolution,you have a screw with 3'' of slippage.

Also,one of the designs for a landing craft considered by the USMC back then had big ol' helical screws like that on it.Not too long ago,the 80 or 90s I think,there was another LC design called the "Alligator" which put the helicals inside the hull and could chew up logs more than two feet in diamter.
