  • Body piercing health issues

So I've read posts about policies and rules regarding piercings but they don't answer my questions. I am in fire school and have nipple rings. They say body piercings (excluding earrings and facial piercings) cause burns in the live burn buildings but I'm not so sure (what about wearing an underwire bra???). Does anyone have any personal stories of body piercings actually causing problems?

Bowhunter...would that have been with your underwire? :-)

Seriously - I haven't heard anything, and never had any issues with an underwire myself.....I WOULD always take off any jewelery I had on (rings, earrings) before gearing up though....it HURTS to have a stud pushed into your head if something hits you in the ear!

Try having a Industrial Catch in you hood some time, or your Face piece

If the jewelry gets that hot, you have other things to worry about at that point.

I personally don't have any. But. There might be a problem with SCBA straps.
I think earrings would get hot long before any under clothing accessories.

I've never heard anyone who wears a necklace, chain, or medal get burned from it. If you're concerned about the underwire, don't wear one for the burn building.

I've never had any problems.....Eliminate the piercings and you shouldnt have any problems either.

              No piercings but 4 tats.
The last time I was run through a state burn trailer,we were told to remove all watches, rings and jewelry, including eyeglasses(just like before Sea and Anchor detail in the Navy) to avoid even the slightest risk that something would hang up(even packed up the way we were) or absorb heat while inside.
Yes,you are below the fire level but it still feels like sticking your face into a BBQ grill.
If your piercings are removable,I'd recommend doing so for the duration of the drill and considering not wearing them on duty if they aren't quickly and easily(read: painless) removable.

Every once in a while the metal plate in my head heats up.

Not too uncomfortable, but it smells like fried calamari.

Now you tell me. And here I've always wonder why I got the hankering for sea food when you were on the fire ground!

I always removed any piercings before I went on duty or did any training fire operations.
