DENVILLE — A 20-year veteran of the Denville police department risked his life Monday to rescue a dog from a burning truck on Interstate 80, Denville police said.
Officer Michael Lucas responded to a call of a pick-up truck fire on the westbound lane of I-80 near mile marker 39.9 about 10:42 a.m.
Lucas arrived to find the truck and the travel trailer it was towing fully engulfed in flames. The driver informed Lucas that his dog Duke, a Vizsla/Rottweiler mix, was still inside the cab of truck.
“Lucas approached the vehicle, which was fully engulfed in thick, heavy black smoke and opened the door,” said Lt. Paul Nigro. “He couldn’t see anything and felt his way around the cab. He found the dog in the backseat.”
Lucas removed Duke from the backseat and the animal was transported to the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains for smoke inhalation. Duke was released a few hours later to his owner and is in good health, according to police
