  • Serious and Important Question

    Seriously.

    (Just kidding)

I've encountered a lot of firefighters in different places and for some reason 8/10 that I see all have mustaches. Am I missing something here? Almost all firefighters I've seen have a mustache. Is there some requirement to have a stache' to be a firefighter? Chief, Captain , Lieutenant they all have mustaches.

Is this just a funny coincidence or am I missing something?

For arguments sake, I will assume you are talking about the male firefighters that you have met.
In olden days when firemen used wooden ladders and rubber coats, a mustache was used supposedly used as a form of crude SCBA. The bushier the better to filter out smoke particles.
In modern days, it could be a brotherhood statement or a fashion statement. Either way, mustaches make a lousy SCBA.
BTW- I have had a mustache for 35 years.

Many of these fellows were either 1970's porn stars, or just watched a lot of old porn.
I am now a past chief and the views, opinions, and comments are mine and mine alone. I do not speak for any department or in any official capacity. Although, they would be smart to listen to me.

Back in the day, you never know who was cooking or what was on the menu. The stache was also a pretty good soup strainer.

It's more of a culture thing. Firefighters were the strong macho guys that performed feats of bravery and chivalry. They were the protector of woman and children and held to a high standard of honor and respect for all.

our chief is the only guy on the department with a stache...

I just thought it had to do with guys wanting some sort of facial hair and with the introduction of the BA it was the only facial hair that wouldn't break the seal.

A Captain on my old volunteer department explained moustaches being common in the ooolllddd days of volunteer departments, back when the Chief was the probie who had to feed the horses and shovel their sh**(good training for his current job) as because they thought the facial hair would be a good filter for the smoke.
The guys who'd get up close and personal with the flames would grow as luxuriant a beard and/or moustache as they could genetically manage and tuck the hairs into their mouth for breathing protection.
That's what I was told by a guy who had the only beard in old department pictures whenever they'd get a new rig.

                        Amazing observation...

You are correct about this. It was good training for dealing with firefighters that can't feed themselves or change their own diapers.

Of course, we have evolved today and most Chief's assign guys for the diaper detail. For meals, they are on their own...

Me,too. The last time I grew my hair long and a beard, people would walk across the street to avoid me and someone who I badly wanted back in high school not only didn't recognize me when I ran into her,she demanded identification.(No,it wasn't because I wrecked her car.we met in the bar she worked in)
That alone is reason enough for me to stay usually clean shaven and close cropped hair. There's also the bennie where I can get a tight face seal on an SCBA mask.I hate the smell of burning stuff.I cough for days when I inhale it which is why I'm glad that I never took up smoking.
