Giuliani Toes Water For White House Bid

    POSTED: 5:50 pm EST November 13, 2006
    UPDATED: 6:03 pm EST November 13, 2006

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a moderate Republican best known for his stewardship of the city after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, has taken the first step in a 2008 presidential bid, GOP officials said Monday.

The former mayor filed papers to create the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee Inc., establishing a panel that would allow him to raise money for a White House run and travel the country.

The four-page filing, obtained by The Associated Press, lists the purpose of the nonprofit corporation "to conduct federal 'testing the waters' activity under the Federal Election Campaign Act for Rudy Giuliani."

The paperwork is signed by Bobby Burchfield, a partner at the D.C.-based law firm of McDermott Will & Emery, a firm that handles political work.

Giuliani spokeswoman Sunny Mindel declined to comment.

Giuliani was widely praised for leading the city during and after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He has said for months that he would wait until the end of the 2006 elections to decide whether to embark on a White House bid.

The former mayor is a moderate who supports gun control and abortion rights, stands that would put him at odds with the majority of GOP conservative base.

Still, the Giuliani brand remains strong; he headlined fundraisers for Republican candidates nationwide and his travel has done little to deny 2008 ambitions. During a visit earlier this month to Columbia, S.C., Giuliani dodged the question: "There's a chance, but that's after this election is over."

He then left South Carolina for New Hampshire, site of the nation's first primary and another GOP fundraiser.

Giuliani enjoys strong name recognition and roughly the same level of support as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Arizona Sen. John McCain. Rice has insisted that she will not run; McCain is likely to file his papers creating an exploratory committee shortly.

Giuliani, who was in his final days as New York City mayor when a pair of planes crashed into the World Trade Center's towers, became a national hero. Within hours of the attack, the mayor was visiting the site, caked in dust and walking through the chaos - a moment replayed repeatedly on television.

Assuming the role of "America's Mayor" and Time Magazine's Person of the Year for 2001, Giuliani remained an in-demand speaker and GOP fundraiser. He was the first Republican to lead New York in decades, had cut crime and redeveloped rundown parts of the city.

He was a former U.S. attorney, leading campaigns against organized crime and corruption. He spent two years as the Justice Department's No. 3 post, overseeing all U.S. attorneys, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the U.S. Marshals Service. The Brooklyn native was first elected New York's mayor in 1993, pledging to improve the city.

Giuliani eyed a run for the U.S. Senate in 2000, but ended that run while battling prostate cancer and a made-for-tabloids divorce from television star Donna Hanover. The messy divorce and his relationship with Judith Nathan also made his campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton all the more difficult.

I don't see what all the hub bub is about Rudy.

He was not exactly a shining star of a Mayor - as I am sure the folks from NYC and FDNY can attest to.

But his defining moment was, of course 9/11.

Then again, Winston Churchill sucked after WWII when he was elected, but was phenominal as a wartime leader.

I'll agree, on September 10, 2001 Giuliani was a fairly hated man.

He isn't liked by many today either. He will be outed as the crook and huckster that he is...and hopefully the "Can Man" and Bernie "son of a whore" Kerik will get theirs...although Bernie already gave us a look at what is to come with his plea convicitions.

May they all rot in hell.

PS-It was Rudy and Von Essen that gave us sh*t radios on no bid contracts without field testing and recall Black Sunday in Jan of 05...that was Von Essen at the helm refusing to replace the old ropes. Rudy wanted to stop the search for remains and dump the remaining bodies in Fresh Kills...they attempted to claim all the remainng bodies were vaporized...but were countered by widows who's husbands remains were just recovered days earlier and more or less intact! Needless to say they dropped that plan.

His walking down the street in the aftermath is an iconic moment.

Then again, he was there since while he was Mayor, the City decided the ideal location for it's Emergency Operations Center was in a complex known to be a target of foreign attack...

Yeah, the location made no sense to me. Especially given the past attack on the WTC.

I used to think he wasn't that bad but then his administration started with the BS that FFFred mentions. They are still finding body parts years later because of his hurry up and reopen the financial district attitude. This also was supported by the Feds (Christie Todd Whitman should be in jail). Guilliani only seemed to support the emergency services when it was politically convenient for him. Do you want this guy running the country? I don't. I would afraid of who he would put in his cabinet. Probably more beauties like Kerik.

                      Short Memories

I guess most of the complainers forgot about the good things Rudy did for the FDNY and the City. My property has quadrupled in value since I bought in 1988. Thank-you Rudy! I don't have to trip over vagrants when I walk down my block. Thank-you Rudy. My car doesn't get broken into once a week like it used to. Thank-you Rudy.

As for the FDNY, let's see...bunker gear, hoods, shorts, RAC units, Quartermaster, FAST Trucks, fifth man, opened three new companies, created 5 new Squads, created Special Operations Command, merged EMS with the FDNY and improved patient care, CFR-D First Responder program, Defibrillators, Thermal Imaging Cameras, Local Law 10 for High-Rise Fire Safety, improved training,

OPENED COMPANIES, DIDN'T CLOSE THEM LIKE OTHER MAYORS

Created the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to coordinate all agencies during emergencies. This put the FDNY on the same level playing field with all other agencies instead of being the bastard stepchild...

Rudy was at the hospital every time a brother was seriously injured. He went to as many funerals as humanly possible after 9-11. I watched him grieve with us. It was NOT an act. It was not because he was a politician.

You are the first one I have ever heard say that this actually benefitted patient care.

I guess I improperly stated my point. I meant that his actions on that day are all that people remember.

I did not mean that it was his shining moment.

I'm thinking he's going to have a hard time getting the nomination with John McCain (sp?) running. I could very well see a John/Rudy ticket, though.

now.. i don't know much about the man and his politics or the man himself.

but i do know he was down in md with our governor during the elections and was holding get togethers with the firefighters.

as i said i don't know much about him besides what most people know but i give him credit for at least realizing there are firefighters in this world.

don't know if i would vote for him or not... that would come down to research and knowing what my other options are
