There is an opening here in Ecorse, MI at USS for a firefighter/EMT. I am currently working at a very unstable small local department full-time, and am considering jumping to the private sector. Does anyone have any experience at this particular company or know anyone who does? Any guidance / info would be great.

I used to work at Fairless. Wasn't too bad, the only problem with a satalite (outside Pittsburg) plant at least from what I noticed is sometimes you get forgotten by corporate. If you know anyone who works there, ask them about it. Also, make sure there are no plans to "minimize" the processes there. Brush up on your HazMat and Tech-Rescue too. Either way good luckMatt G.

Thanks, Matt. I did work a little as a Wackenhut fire marshal when I first started, so I am somewhat familiar with how the industrial world is. I don't know, or even know anyone who knows someone that works/has worked there. I'm just curious how they treat their fire/security folks and if there's any danger of a transfer, etc.

One good piece of info to find out is if the fire/ems/security personel are employed by USS or by an outside security contractor. When I worked there, we had just switched over to a security contractor. From what I hear it was much better when employed by USS. I don't remember any forced transfers, but I believe the oportunity exists if so desired.Matt G.

hey dtownsteve, including Mike Wansa, who is their gas hazards guy, and he's an ex-fire chief (awesome guy). Shoot me an email and I'll hook you up with some people. I work with a bunch of contractors over there on their gas detection stuff.
