Any discussion or experience about the advantages one way or the other for Red or Clear lenses used in your MARS 888?

Not sure how this topic fits in with fireground tactics but we have one of each on one of our engines. They both seem to work just fine.

Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.

"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.

Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

Depends on what state you are in! You don't indicate that.

All states have different rules regarding lights on fire apparatus, be they white, red, blue, amber or whatever.

A clear lens with a high wattage seal beam on a Mars 888 light will moved traffic better than one with a red lens. Having said that, I would see if I could find the most wattage seal beam that will fit in the housing and go with that.

At any case check on the states motor vehicle rules regarding fire apparatus. You may be surprized as what that says.

          Clear lens

We run a clear lens with either a white or red bulb depending on what is available or who happens to change it. Like most lights, its just another tool and does little in the big picture.

I think you can learn about them in the Volunteer Corner. Also try searching Wacker or Whacker depending on what part of the country you are in.

I'd be more concerned with the reliability and functionality of your apparatus versus the bells and whistles. I have never seen a MARS 888 put out a fire or a chrome wheel cover make a rescue.

lexfd5, at least you have seen one, I never even heard of it! But if they are in the same category as wasting money on chrome wheel covers, then we don't need them either.

Guess you are like us. The lowest bid that meets the minimum requirements wins. Plus it's hard to keep all that chrome clean when you are making runs and not doing the parade thing.

I don't think that they are a waste of money, they are another kind of warning light, they get mounted on the front of the truck. I'll try and find a pic of my Dad's old rescues.

Not saying they do not work. Just do not think they are that important. I would be more concerned with the rest of the truck. I have made runs, as have many others here, with a single bubble light and two alternating flashers in the front grille. IMHO I got through traffic about the same then as I do today.

I understand where you are coming from. I agree that you can respond without them with no problem. They are merely just another option.

                            Not a Mars, not a good picture...but...

That was our water supply Engine when I first joined. Didn't have the lightbar or anything else on the roof when I joined -- just the combination figure-8 light and siren on the hood. Couple incandescent flashers on the rear. That was it.

Back in the day, they weren't just pieces of chrome.
