Does anyone know if it is required by NFPA to have a green flashing light on top of the command vehicle? I have heard that it is and also that is is not.

There is no requirement to have a green light at the command post.
NIMS requires that a command post is established and it's location is clearly identfied verbally or by radio to all responders. There is no NIMS requirement for a green light at the command post.Train to fight the fires you fight.Comment

Most of our Battalion cars have green "Kojack" lights that were to be utilized the location of the command post when it was in the area of the car.

I believe it MAY be a California thing that command posts have to have green lights... I've seen it on some of the LA firetrucks (HAZMAT Squad 80 I think?) Its a pierce with the slide-out command center dealy, and if I remember correctly it has a green rotator above it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Not a bad idea for NIMS to do something like that, it would be the first easy decision they ever made. Would interfere with green being volunteer EMS in some places though.Comment

My dept in Michigan has a green light mounted on top of the Batt Chief's vehicle. It is used occasionally. The walk in rescue also has a flag and a light in the event it is used for a CP.Comment

Green lights to mark the IC have been used in my area for almost 20 years, every command unit has one, but Ive never heard of it being an NFPA or NIMS thing.Fire Marshal/Safety Officer
