  • Holmatro Couplings

anyone having problems with the new holmatro couplings they are putting on? We had our annual service on our power unit and tools a few months ago, and since then whenever we run the tools the coupling's start to leak (not the threaded side though, it's running out the back side of the part you push back to uncouple the hose's, not sure what that part is technically called!) it's not on a certain hose, it's on both of them, both ends, and at the power unit. They have came out and replaced them again and they are still leaking, they said the reason they was leaking is b/c we sprayed WD-40 on them. Which is B.S. b/c we haven't even used them on a call since they have serviced them, we have trained with them a few times, and would check them every couple of weeks. This is the first issue we have had with them since we got them about 10 yrs. ago

I taught a class last month and both departments had Holmatro with leaking couplers. I think they got the problem corrected. I advised them to contact the factory in Maryland direct and tell them your problem.

Yeah, I believe it was you that taught the class! They came out and changed them, when they reserviced the cutter, said that the reason they started leaking was that we had used wd-40 on the couplings, but we took them out this past tues to run them, and they was leaking again

I have heard of Holmotro tools leaking, but I have not seen it in the sets that I get to work with a a race course I help out at. I believe you when you say that you did not use WD-40, but this is a good time to remind everyone to be vary careful about what you use to clean your hydraulic equipment. The modern fluids we are using these days, and the fluid related components on the tools, all have the potential to "react" to certain chemicals. While WD-40 has been used for years to "clean" things around the shop, you really need to STRICTLY follow the manufacturer recommendations when it comes to cleaning your "life-saving" hydraulic tools that cost thousands of dollars.

I'm trying to get a good answer to this problem. Using WD-40 was a no-no on the older couplings. I believe using a silicone based cleaner/lubricant is the better solution, just don't overdue it. Many fire departments use the WD40 on blades, arms etc and overspray washing the grease out between the blades and pivot areas of the tools. This will cause gaulding (sp) where the movement of the blades, arms with no grease between causes the metal to chip and you will start getting a grinding/grating sound when the tool is in operation.

Breaking News: From a Holmatro Service Center, Holmatro lists in their user manuals using WD40 or a silicone spray as being safe. So take it from there.

Holmatro to my knowledge know that they had an issue with the coupler, but it was to be manufacture based. Parker the company who makes the coupler and the hose for Holmatro in Germany is apparently have fixed the problem.

                  Holmatro Couplings

Which set of couplings are you talking about? We have the new CORE system and have not had any problems with them with the exception of getting them to aligh up and connect. We found this was due to being new couplings and with some wear and tear, they work fine.
