  • I remember when.....

I would like to hear from people who can remember back a few years (or quite a few years) to what they did at MVA's before hydraulic tools, and all the modern equipment we have now.

I can remember back about 17 years I was with the BC Ambulance Service (BC Canada) and we had a porta power stored at the station. If we got to the scene of an MVA and there were people trapped we would have to get the police to go back and get it. I cannot believe how far we have come since then.

I'm sure some of you have even more interesting stories!!

In 1980 when I started, we had a port-a-power and and air chisel and thought we were ready to handle anything that came at us. We also carried a cutting torch and alot of crow bars. The departments located east and west of our district both had hydraulic tools that we called for pins, but we often had things opened up before they got there. Looking back, it is amazing to think how much we counted on what seems to be inferior tools.
