Just thought I'd share this photo I took of a 2001 Volvo S40 gas-charged canister we found during roof removal. The driver side impact curtain had not deployed during the accident, so cutting into this would have not been pretty for us.

This kind of picture really gets your attention! Since the side airbag and other SRS systems have come along, we use the catch phrase "Strip Before You Rip" to reinforce the need to strip that plastic back before you start cutting. I'm sure it won't be to long before we read a story of firefighters injured cutting these little "bombs".
BONES------> Amen ! to your comment. The new and old fellas need to sink this idea in NOW-----> ALWAYS strip the trim! (never say never and never say always. Right ?)
I concur (GREAT photos maxgts)
Be safe.

Removing the interior trim to identify the gas-generators is pretty easy with the tool you can see on the attached photo. Its not expensive and fits in every pocket or toolbox.
