  • Shallow, weedy body recovery with sidescan

Our dive team has a Lowrance Carbon HDS sidescan unit and it works great in deep and/or weed free water. We've had two recent drowning recoveries in 8' of water (lakes) and both were very weedy. The sidescan image just shows the tops of the weeds - doesn't penetrate to the bottom. The topscsan image is better, but is full of weeds coming up from the lake bottom. Sounds like this is pretty common with dive teams. Could you turn down the sensitivity to get the weeds to fade out and manage to still see a body? Curious what others have seen work. Any ideas to work around this? Thanks!!

I'm the dope on the end of the rope (diver) so I don't know much about sonar. I'd suggest you talk to some of your best fishermen in the area and see what they do to find fish that are hiding in the weeds. We have a former professional waterfowl and fishing guide and current university bass team coach that lives in our area who has volunteered to instruct us using our own Hummingbird sonar systems. I don't think a date is set, but it should be in the next several weeks. There's probably someone in your area that has extensive experience with Lowrance fish finders that can help you.

Thanks. Some of those guys live and breathe fishing and upgrade their sonar rigs every year or two. They spend more time on the water than they do at work. They are looking for something much smaller than our usual targets and their targets are almost always in or near cover. We have to train on all types of fire and rescue, in addition to PR and actual calls and paperwork, while they focus on one thing. Sometimes the real experts are the ones you'd least expect, especially with the types of sonar rigs most of us are using.
