SANDOWN – A local firefighter suffered a fatal heart attack Sunday after climbing out of the Exeter River following a cold-water rescue training session, a fire official said.

Firefighters are mourning the loss of Harold Frey, 46, of Sandown, who joined the department only a few months ago but who had been a firefighter/paramedic in Epping and currently was a paramedic with CAREPLUS Ambulance Service in Nashua.

State Fire Marshal William Degnan said the heart attack occurred around 11 a.m., moments after Frey completed training in the water. Degnan said Frey was coming over the bank of the river off Phillips Road when he began having trouble breathing.

Emergency personnel quickly administered aid and continued to treat Frey as he was transported to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, where he was pronounced dead.

"Any firefighter function has a significant amount of stress to it," Degnan said.

In a statement, Fire Chief Wilfred Tapley said Frey will be missed.

"It's been very difficult for the department," Degnan said. "It's a true brotherhood."

Members of the Granite State Fire Service Support Team were on hand at the fire station to offer assistance to firefighters.
