Anti-Fog Level A Suit

What are you using to prevent fogging in Level A suits??

If your Level "A" suits are what us Brits call Gas Tight Suits, (One piece, rubber boots attached, large plastic visor), misting up of these items is always a problem. We have a chamois cloth attached to a bit of string on the belt of the suit,. You feel a bit like the window cleaner but its better than being able to see nothing but shapes and bumping into stuff. The new GTS we carry were supposed to have anti misting visors, but that theory went out the window on the first wear.

if you will take a "dab" of dawn liquid dishwashing detergant and wipe on the face piece if will not fog. this also works on scba and apr masks. we have been doing this for years with no problems.

We do something very similar to martin. Or if we are wearing hard hats underneath we will tape a towel to the brim. I will try that dishwashing soap thing though.

i work in the private haz mat industry and we have also been using the dishing soap trick on our air purifying respirators for several years. about five or six times a year some one comes up with a new anti-fog scheme and we try them but seems like we always go back to our dawn dishwashing soap. we also carry towels in our level "A" suits i case of extended time. we use the drager BG-4 rebreather. if anyone has other trick of the trade please share them.

Another funny solution is a womans maxi-pad (a new, unused one please) with the adhesive sticking the pad to the top of your face plate. When you need to de-fog, just push the shield against your forehead.

Many of our members have taken a regular, heavy knap bath towel, and sewn a band of elastic into the inside of it so it fits onto the hard-hat you are wearing. Then, much like the replies above, simply rub the suit visor against the top of your helmet and the towel wipes it clean.

Works pretty well!

We always carry a towel inside our level a suits. Just pull your arm out of the sleeve and wipe the face shield.

Anti-fog

The EPA hazmat trainers swear by a product called Anti-fog. It is made by a company called World Optical out of Arlington, TX. They also use the tampon stuck to the hardhat, but have to be careful not to offend the opposite sex.

I think it was Chuck Yeager who wrote that the engineers came up with some pricey anti-fog for the canopy of the aircraft they were using at the time to try to break the sound barrier. It didn't work all that well. They found that "Prell" shampoo worked much better, and was about 1% the cost of the stuff they were buying.

Shampoos and dishwashing detergents are mostly water-based. When spread on a plastic surface in a thin film, the water will evaporate. The surface is normally hydrophobic, causing moisture to bead; this is how plastic and glass "fogs up." If the surface is capable of absorbing a tiny amount of water, the problem is solved- hence the shampoo/dishwashing liquid solution.

We do this, it works great......just use new ones, not soiled ones.
