HazMat and ALS response

Could anyone point me in the right direction concerning HazMat incidents and ALS response? Aside from local protocols, is there any reference data that outline proper/recommended response on these incidents? I'm just really looking for general guidelines, not necessarily specific protocols (but will take that if it's all that's out there).
Thanks for the info in advance. BTW, this is for a class project (EMT-P).
