The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued a regulation which requires off truck remote shutoff capability for cargo tank delivery vehicles. These trucks carry propane, anhydrous ammonia and refrigerants. The remote shutoff device operates by radio frequency and can close the cargo tank's outlet shutoff valve at a distance up to 150 feet from the truck. All new trucks manufactured after July 1, 2001 will have the devices. Retrofits of existing trucks will take place when they receive their 5 year pressure test. Some propane distributors are already retrofitting their fleets ahead of schedule.
