Are you looking at DOD or municipal jobs? Your veterans preference and a degree are always beneficial. Every state is different regarding what qualifications/certifications will put you in a better position to get hired. Here in Michigan, Firefighter 2, Paramedic and preferably a degree is helpful. However, with the rampant layoffs, I don't see the job market improving any time soon.
If you're looking at DOD, IFSAC or ProBoard fire certifications are the standard. Without them, it's almost impossible to get in.
Feel free to shoot me an e-mail. Best of luck to you. Thank you for your service.
