DoD Fire Hiring Process

I am currently an active duty firefighter and my terminal leave starts in July. I have certs through my II's, Haz Tech & IC, and NREMT-b. I have started applying for DoD jobs Nationwide and have had some have closed out and been forwarded to the hiring manager. Does anyone know how long it takes to get word back from the different agencies...Air Force, Army, Navy? Also any advice that anyone has to make the hiring process easier or for me to have a better chance I'm open to all advice.

Making it easier? Know someone. In the DOD system especially it helps.

If you get referred to the hiring authority, you can always call the department that you are applying at. Ask to speak with the deputy and see where they are at in the process. Be respectful. I aways started with the statement that i was new to the process and had a few questions if he/she had the time.

It could be days, weeks, or months. All depends on how fast the agency needs warm bodies, and how selective they are about who they want to hire (read: who does the Chief want to hire.......)

I would say on the average, from the time they refer you to the "hiring authority" to the time you hear something, would be about a month.

You could also be placed on an eligibility list for future hiring purposes so that they don't have to go through the wringer of placing an announcement all over again.

To Fire 49: I am active duty Air Force/ I have my ARFF, Pumper, MWS, FF I/II, my I's and II's, Hazmat- Tech/ IC, NREMT-b. I would apply for city departments, but the hiring process is long and most states don't take DoD certs. Also with the Department of Defense I can get hired without actually being present at the location. I'm trying to have a job lined up before I get out and right now I'm stationed overseas.

Why the big push for city work? Federal employment is a fine way to go for a vet. You can buy back your active duty time, the work is familiar, and it's a lot more stable.

That makes me chuckle a little. The grass isnt always greener. The feds is a great place right now, especially as cities are tightening their belts. And yes we do work 16 hours extra each week. Most city guys I know are stressed about getting ot, so it is nice to have it built in (I started as city firefighter).

As far as the post originator, I think it has all been said. It takes time. Call them and see where they are. I helps that you have your DOD certs. And to correct you, there are about 34 states that accept DOD certs. (that number may be off a little as I did not subtract Providences of Canada) DOD certs are IFSAC or PROBOARD, so if you have a dream of working for a city they will take it. Except CA, they dont play well with others. You can get more information at the following sites.
