    Hello from New Jersey,

Nice to have you aboard Andy.

You question of alarm assignments is different from a city,
to a small town. Vol Depts call for mutual aid when they are
tapped out. They (we) call for what we need, weather it be a pumper
or ladder. They are called from neighboring towns and so as not to
take all from one town the mutual aid is call from many town.
We may call for 1 pumper from town A, a ladder from town B, and
another pumper for town C. Town D will provide coverage for B & C
while they are out of town. As you know each fire is different and
you may need different kinds of help for different situations.
One of the cities near me runs the following, 1st alarm is 2 pumpers
and a ladder and a depty chief. 2nd alarm brings a 1 pumper and 1 ladder and the rescue. 3 alarm brings the last two pumpers and brings
in companies from other towns to man the stations. It also acitvates
a duty recall for the next duty crews. If group 1 is working group 3
    is called into work.

Hope this helps and nice to have you with us.

    Joe

    Hi Ian,
Thanks for clearing that up, I kinda had an idea thats
what is was like but wasnt too sure. Here in the UK we
ask for what we want and get only that, for example say
the first attendance to a warehouse fire would be 3 pumps
and aerial appliance, if I arrived and found it well alight
then a request for 2 more pumps would be `make pumps five`
this is all I would get, special trucks (ie Rescue, foam units,
BA support) are all on request only.

    Thanks Again Matey

Every state, region, and city has a different way of doing this, but they are all basically the same. Example: First out- 2 engines, 1 ladder, 1 Batallion . Need help 2nd alarm may consist of 1,2,3,? next due engines, 1,2,3,? next due ladders, next due officers. 3rd alarm, 4th alarm, etc. If needed everyone possible you can do an all call getting everything. Hope this helps some. Ian

Cheers Guys for the quick response,

I have a question, although it may seem a little
    stupid !

I personally take an interest in what we British call
`making up at incidents` in other words calling for
help at a developing fire/incident. I have heard of the
system you guys use, second alarm, third alarm etc, is this
the same across the US or does it vary from dept to dept, ie
is there national guidlines laid down for you guys?

    Thanks in advance!

    Andy

    Hi From a British Firefighter

    Hi Guys,

Just joined today and thought I would say Hi, I am a
whole-time (career) firefighter with the Merseyside
Fire Brigade in the UK. Have been in the job for 8
years (since I was 18) and consider it the greatest
job in the world. A bit of info on my brigade, we
have 26 stations, all whole-time manned and we average
about 56,000 calls per year, my station does about 3,200
odd. Anyway, if any of you guys wish to say Hi then please
    do so!

    Best wishes to all

    Andy
