  • Turnout pants too wide, need advice

    Hey guys,
I recently went through a fire academy and am now working as a firefighter at a small volunteer fire department. Temporarily all they can give me for turnout pants are a size 38 waist instead of my size which is a 34. Are there any ideas on how to make the waist fit? I would love to slap a belt on them but the pants have no belt loops. I feel like there should be some Macgyver solution out there.
    Thanks!

As far as I know they are tailored to one person, and not really adjustable. Are you still on probation or are you actually running calls? If you are running calls and are interior, you need fitted gear. Otherwise, its not really a big deal.

some have minor adjustment straps built in; but realistically, you should have pants that are measured to you.

However, not every department has the funds to get brand new gear for every new member, so getting handme downs that fix until they get new gear is pretty common place.

Personally, I'd rather have pants that are too big vs too small. If the pants are a 38 waist, and your normal pants are 34, that's pretty close; after all, you typically want 2 more inches in your turnout pants so they fit over your clothes. so that extra two inches isn't too much of a big deal.
If my basic HazMat training has taught me nothing else, it's that if you see a glowing green monkey running away from something, follow that monkey!
